Chapter 5

Next chapter is here! Now entering Christmas break, so I'll be here for a few weeks. More chapters may be here soon. Writing this on a computer this time, so if there are any typos or missing spaces, that's probably because of that. Also, I noticed this makes the reader part sound more like a pet reader than a part of the team, but don't worry. Grimmchild will be learning more about how to communicate and actually be included soon. Sorry for that. With the next flame, Grimmchild will be smart enough to be able to learn how to speak. The Grimmchild will know a few words already, though. Simple ones.

(2nd POV)

You and Ruby were just walking through the halls of the dorms, since you couldn't sleep. You saw Jaune standing at his team's door, looking pretty upset, so Ruby went to talk to him. You couldn't talk, but decided to just go for emotional support.

Ruby: "Hey Jaune! Long time, no see! Did you lock yourself out again?" As she said this, he turned around, startled by the sudden voice of someone next to him.

Jaune: "Oh, uh, nope!" He raised his scroll. "Got it!"

Ruby: "So! Where have you been lately?"

Jaune: "I, uh..." He tried to lie his way out of what was about to happen, but couldn't even get an idea. "I messed up. I did something I shouldn't have, and now Cardin has me on a leash, and Pyrrha won't even talk to me, and..." He started breathing heavily. You chirped and flew up to him, setting yourself down in his hair, in an attempt to calm him down and cheer him up, but it failed. "I'm starting to think coming to this school was a bad idea." He pressed his back to the door, sliding to the floor in depression. "I'm a failure."

Ruby and you, somehow: "Nope!" Ruby turned to you, surprised, before turning back to Jaune.

Jaune: "Nope?"

Ruby thought for a moment, only to say the same thing.

Ruby: "Nope!" You chirped in agreement and she sat next to him, picking you up.

Jaune: "You know, you're not the easiest person to talk to about this kind of stuff."

Ruby: "Nope!" Jaune leaned into the door some more. "Jaune, maybe you were a failure when you were a kid..." He leaned into the door more. "...and you might've even been a failure the first day we met!" He went even lower. "But, you can't be one now. You know why?"

Jaune: "Uhhhh, because...? "You chirped like you were asking the same thing.

Ruby: "Because, it's not just about you anymore. You've got a team now, Jaune. We both do! And if we fail, then we'll just be bringing them down with us." She got up and placed her hands on her hips. You floated up and landed on her shoulder. "We have to put our teammates first, and ourselves second. Your team deserves a great leader, Jaune. And I think that can be you." She waved goodbye as Jaune looked up to her, slightly inspired by her inspirational anime speech. "Have a good night, Jaune!" With that, you both left to get ready for bed.

(Timeskip, still 2nd POV)

After a long ride in a Bullhead, you all had arrived at Forever Fall. All around you, there were trees with red leaves and grey trunks. With you were teams RWBY, CRDL, and JNPR, but Jaune was with Cardin instead of his own team, carrying all of their stuff. You were watching everything from inside Ruby's hood.

Glynda: "Yes, students, the forest of Forever Fall is indeed beautiful. But we are not here to sight-see. Professor Peach has asked all of you to collect samples from the trees deep inside this forest, and I'm here to make sure none of you die while doing so."

Everyone suddenly stopped, except for Jaune. Grunting and wobbling around to try and catch up, he bumped into Cardin, almost dropping everything. The bully turned back to look at Jaune, who attempted to feign innocence by whistling. Glynda continued with her instructions and held up an empty jar.

Glynda: "Each of you is to gather one jar's worth of red sap. However, this forest is full of the creatures of Grimm, so be sure to stay by your teammates. We will rendezvous back here at 4 o'clock. Have fun!"

After Ms. Goodwitch was done, Jaune tried to sneak away from Cardin. This was a dumb idea, considering the fact that he was carrying a big box and six jars. Instead of sneaking, he made as much noise as possible before being pulled back by Cardin.

Cardin: "Come on, buddy--let's go!"

Jaune looked back at his team, and Pyrrha was looking right back. Ren and Nora were already walking off. He lowered his gaze and followed CRDL, to the disappointment of Pyrrha, who sighed and walked with the others.

Team RWBY, plus you, had finally reached the perfect trees. You weren't interested in that, though. You were more interested in the weirdly shaped carving in a tree a little farther away than the rest of your team. Flying out of Ruby's hood, you floated over, with Ruby close behind you. The carving was something you had both seen before. A Grimmkin torch. Pulling out her scythe, and setting it into its Sniper Form, Ruby walked over to the torch, ready to fight.

A Grimmkin Novice appeared in a plume of red smoke, yanking the torch out of the tree. Ruby shot a single bullet into it, making it jump back and pull the torch free. The torch ignited and the fight began. The rest of her team, hearing the gunshot, ran over to help. They couldn't get very close, though, because they hit a dreamgate. The Novice charged at her, bumping into her and pushing her back. She got a single shot in that time, even though she wasn't prepared. It reappeared and flung fireballs at her. She switched Crescent Rose to its Scythe Form, dashing between the with her Semblance and cutting the Grimmkin a few times. It didn't look like it could fight much longer, the poor little nuisance. It reappeared and she shot it once, killing it. You absorbed the final Nightmare Flame and were ready to grow. You two weren't paying attention, but the rest of Team RWBY were cheering for you. By "you", I mean Ruby, because you didn't do anything but dodge. Yang ran up to Ruby after the dreamgate fell, concerned for her sister's safety.

Yang: "Ruby! Are you alright?" Ruby turned and faced her sister, smiling.

Ruby: "I'm fine, sis! It didn't do much, anyway."

You rested in Ruby's hair, feeling stronger thanks to the flame. You couldn't help but feel that something was going to go wrong very soon, though, and you knew exactly who would cause the problem.

And with that, the chapter is finished! 1,016 words for this one. Sorry for the wait. I was going to finish this a few day ago, but then Volume 8, Chapter 6 came out, and I forgot about it. I also was busy with Christmas stuff. Also, sorry about the short, badly written fight scene. Not very good at those. I would've done a timeskip or something if I could, but it's an important thing. Can't ignore important events for Team RWBY.

Anyway, I'm going to end this here. Goodbye, for now.
