CHAPTER 2

I walked into the balcony taking a deep breath filling my lungs with Syrian air, it felt like a dream to be reunited with my soul. It was like I left my out-going loud and bubbly self here every two years and took only my disguise when I returned to London. Even though I was born there, I’ve always felt closer to Syrian soil then to the soil of the UK.

I looked up at the dark sky, realising how long it was since I’ve seen stars. I laughed at the memory of a few years back, when I picked the star closest to the moon and named it ‘my star’ I would come back every year and talk to it. Today I looked up at it, as it comfortably sat in its eternal position, I had always pictured it to be hugging the moon always its shadow. I leaned on the edge of the balcony looking down at the now, silent street. The balcony at my granddad’s house was fenced with blurred glass so that no-one from outside could look into it but we could look down through the open spaces between the fence and the edge. I looked up studying the swirls on the glass smiling at the tattoo cartoon pictures we had pasted their last year from a pack of gum, and opened the two windows to get the full view of the street. I poked my head through easily. In the distance I could make out the mountain and was shocked to see that the houses have nearly reached the top of it. It was filled with lights from the houses inhabiting it and it looked beautiful.

After the thirty minute car journey from the airport it was always hectic, you would think that the people who had come to see us would understand that we needed rest after a 6 hour flight. But you wouldn’t get peace in Syria. It is said to be rude not to visit your friends or family which have travelled to get here and it was rude not to allow your visitors in if you have arrived from somewhere as far as an hour by car. Anyway, it’s not like we owned the house, we where visitors here and had to respect anyone that entered the house since they where as much visitors as we where. Of course, my grandparents would never say such a thing but my mum insisted that we didn’t intrude more then we where already. As a child, I hated the many rules I had to keep up with and as a teenager I don’t think I was going to like them any better. I sighed and lifted myself to sit on the edge of the balcony, wanting a second more of peace. I silently thanked my mum for pushing me into the bathroom to have a shower as my wet hair made the heat bearable.

I had only been here a few hours and I was already running away from everyone and hiding to find solitude. But I knew that my newly found solitude would only be mine for a few minutes till people realised I was missing. After my shower I had changed into my new PJ’s ignoring my mum’s protests. My PJ’s consisted of a hot pink tank top and white sports shorts/ leggings up to my knees. With a white and pink short zip up tracksuit top with a hoodie. I left the top in my suitcase it was too hot, but I knew I was going to have to wear it since showing skin was frowned upon in my grandparents house.

I jerked up as I heard noise in the room connected to the balcony and looked through the gap in the balcony door. It was Deli. I smiled and opened the door to wave her in as she gave me an evil look.

‘HEY! Don’t tell me you’re running away already! Am I boring you that much??’ I looked up at her rolling my eyes at her comment and replied teasingly ‘well duuuh! All you have ever done is bore me.’ I stuck out my tongue at her amused with her fake shocked expression and tried to run away before I was crushed by her weight as she jumped on me.
