Me: so a T-shirt and shorts are good?

Kai: fiiiiiiine

I laugh out loud and set my phone down. I feel like his flirting has intensified since the party. It had been about a week since the party and I was excited to see him. He had texted me the day after about wanted to go somewhere with him but I had promised Phoebe and Jr I'd spend the day with them. Kai understood but I can tell he was a little disappointed. We didn't get a chance to hang out for the week because one of us was always busy at the time, but he would always call me at night just to talk with me about both of our days and catch up.

I got dressed in plain T-shirt and shorts, and joined my family at the table for dinner.

"What are you dressed up for?" Phoebe asks poking at my leg with her foot.

"Oh I'm going out with Kai after dinner" I say nonchalantly to see what my family would say.

"Tonight?" My father asks looking up from his plate.

"Yeah" I say cooly trying to keep it light.

"Well be careful mija" my mom says mostly looking at my dad with a "leave it be" face.

"Well I don't think she should be going out so late with a boy" Abuelita says.

I look at her unsure of what to say. Thinking about it now she's never really talked to me about how she feels about Kai. I remembered at the party I introduced them and she shook his hand and said it was good to meet him, but said nothing else about him.

"Mom she's an adult I trust her" my mom says sternly.

"It's not her I don't trust" she says going back to eating her food.

So that's how she felt. I don't understand why she didn't just talk to me about this instead of acting this way.

"Kai is good to me Abuelita" I say hoping she'll at least drop it for now.

She doesn't say anything, just nods and goes back to eating. Maybe they thought I didn't notice, but for the rest of our silent dinner my mother and Abuelita would share a certain look. My father was definitely oblivious, an Jr. and Phoebe knew not to say anything.

After dinner I went to my room. I had some time before Kai planned to come and get me so I decided to sketch again to help pass the time, then my Abuelita came in the room.

I didn't look up from my sketchbook when I asked "why didn't you just talk to me"

"I'm sorry for embarrassing you at dinner, according to your mom I'm just old school."

I look up at her, I know my mom fed this to her, I can tell she doesn't mean what she's saying.

"So that's the only reason?" I say finally looking up to meet her eyes. Just like the day I had the dream her eyes held a different story.

"Yes, I just want you to be careful he's your first boyfriend and I don't want any premarital grandchildren" she warned with a goofy smile, but I could tell she was serious.

I roll my eyes and laugh. "Okay Abuelita" I say and go back to sketching as she walks out of the room.

I know she made a point to joke towards the end but I can tell she's keeping something from me, and after the looks I witnessed at dinner between her and my mom I know they both are. Maybe they both don't like Kai, I just couldn't think of any reason why.
