The Setup

Part Sixteen: The Returner

Lucy's POV:

Brandon(B)

L: Brandon.

B: I know I shouldn't be here but I really want to talk.

L: funny.

I close the door but he stops it.

B: Lucy I'm serious.

Jamie walks over.

J: hey who's there?

He stops when he sees Brandon.

J: oh you must my Chris. It's nice to meet you.

L: umm no that's not Chris. Jamie. This is Brandon. He was just leaving.

Jamie's body tightens and he can feels the anger taking him over.

B: who's this?

He says as he gestures toward Jamie.

L: he a friend. But you should really get going.

J: yeah I think you've been here a little too long now.

Jamie says as he reaches to close the door.

B: listen I don't know who you are but I don't need you to tell me what to do. This is between Lucy and I.

J: no for sure. I'm not telling you want to do. I just don't think you being here is good for you.

B: and why's that?

J: for starters honestly from what I've heard. No one and I really mean no one here really likes you. I mean I don't know you but I would say you leaving might be best for not just you but your career.

B: and what do you know about my career?

J: I know that you'll need both of your arms.

Jamie was getting more and more annoyed by the minute.

L: Jamie's right. I really think you should leave. Connor and Nick are coming down soon.

B: I'm not scared of them. I just want to work all of this out. I miss you.

L: that's good to hear but I don't miss you. I don't think you get it Brandon. You never loved me. You used me to as an emotional punching bag and then you left and chose another girl over me. You never cared you just did what made you happy without even taking a second look as to what made me happy.

B: I know I was an idiot and I want to show you that I've changed.

L: I've learned a lot from you honestly. And I thank you for that. But the biggest lesson I've learned is that people like you never change.

As soon as those words left my mouth I wasn't sad or lonely anymore. I knew those words were true that I was better off without him. For the first time I felt happy.

L: it's time for you to leave. And please. I beg of you don't look back.

Jamie reaches to close the door but Brandon stops it again.

B:  I did love you. You were too good for me and I knew it. I want you to be happy and I see that in your eyes you are. I'm sorry.

He looks at me one more time and walks back to his car. I stand there  happy that there wasn't another fight.

Brandon drives away and I walk back to the kitchen.

Jamie's follows behind me after he closes the door.

J: you ok?

L: honestly?

J: honestly.

L: yeah. I'm happy. It sounds stupid but I think that's what I needed.
