You looked out your car's window which was completely rolled down. It was raining heavily. The sky was dark despite it only being 5pm. You sighed and closed your eyes as big fat water droplets occasionally hit your face and calmed you down. Rain was one of your most favourite things; it made you extremely happy, and now it was doing a good job of distracting you.

You had parked your car exactly ten minutes ago, and haven't moved from your seat since. Only the soothing sound of the rain pelting against the vehicle's roof could be heard, and you tried to focus on that and took deep breaths. The weight of what you were about to do, had hit you in the last minute.

Across the road, you could see the brightly illuminated sign: ☆Friendly Paws☆

It was a hybrid adoption centre. You were going to adopt a hybrid.

You were well aware of how hybrids were treated in the society nowadays. Years ago, when they were first made, people looked at them with wonder in their eyes, wishing they could get the privilege to get closer to them, converse with them-have them. As time passed, that curiosity turned into greed and cruelty. People who bought them, thought of themselves as superiors and started abusing their 'pets' as they liked to call them. There were many cases of abuse throughout the world. With time, some governments passed laws in the favour of the hybrids, but still not enough to rid them of the brutality most of them faced. Some were treated as servants, while some were made to breed against their will.

There were people who treated hybrids kindly and cared for them, but they were few and far between.

And that is one of the main reasons why you wanted to adopt one. You were lonely; with your older brother happily married and your parents all the way across the world, you felt isolated. You had your friends, and they were amazing, but at the end of the day when you returned home, there was no one. After being alone for a long time, you craved companionship. For someone to be there when you returned home tired from work, for someone to listen to you rant about your day, to cook for someone else for once, someone to stay up late with, while cuddling and watching horror movies.

You had so much love and affection to give, but didn't have anyone to dote on.

By adopting a hybrid, you could end your loneliness by having a roommate, and your companion could have a safe home-away from the hands of inhumane people-and feel happy and loved.

But now that you had arrived here, you were having second thoughts. What if you can't choose the right one? There were no right or wrong hybrids, but what if you couldn't get along well? What if they don't like you? What if things remain awkward for a long time? Will they get annoyed by your personality? Not that you were that annoying or anything-quite the opposite actually, people thought you were pleasant to talk to. But you had a tendancy to overthink, so here you were, still sitting in your car, contemplating your choices.

You thought about some of your friends who had hybrids, and got along really with them. They would often tell you about them with endearing looks on their faces.

They were happy.

These were your last thoughts before you grabbed your sling bag, got out of the car and sprinted towards the centre while covering the top of your head with your arms, shielding yourself from the rain. You had a determined look in your eyes, and a light smile played on your lips thinking about various new possibilities-and this time? All positive ones.

You were ready.
