"Please," she whimpers desperately. Seeing her so vulnerable and frightened around that man breaks my heart.
"Shut up!" The chief yells and tightens the knife on her throat earning a yelp from her. Her eyes are locked onto mine and I watch tears fall down her cheeks. I look back at the chief and we glare at eachother before he speaks again.
"Seems like the only reasonable thing to do," he pause again for effect, but what he says next sends shivers down my spine.
"Is to get rid of you!"
I watch in horror as he throws Astrid to the ground a pulls his hand back to aim the knife at my heart. The world slows down.
Astrid screams "NO!" And I watch as the knife leaves his hand, flying straight towards my heart. My feet are frozen to the ground. I inhale and prepare for the pain that will end my life, but it never comes.
I watch Patch jump in front of me and shoot an arrow at the chief in mid air. Patch hits the ground and slides a few feet from me, jumping back up on his feet. My eyes follow the arrow as it strikes the chief straight through his heart. Shock and disbelief spread through the chief's face. Then his legs buckle beneath him and he falls, dead before he hits the ground.
A heavy sigh escapes my lips.
Finally we won, it's over. I look to Astrid, expecting her to meet my eyes, but her attention is held elsewhere. Her eyes are wide in shock, staring at the spot next to me.
My heart drops and I whip my head to the left of me. My eyes find Patch standing a few feet away. One of his hands are covering a spot on his chest. I look closer and see his hand covered in a red liquid. Blood. Then I look at his other hand, the hand that's containing the knife that was meant for me. Patch releases his grip on the knife, dropping it to the ground.
"Hiccup?" I hear him faintly ask in shock.
He starts to waver and I'm next to him in a heartbeat, catching him before he hits the ground. I lay him down gently, tears forming in my eyes.
"Hey hey, you're okay, you're okay! You're gonna be fine Patch!" I manage to choke out. I have him in my arms. His eyes are locked onto mine and they're full of fear and pain.
"God dammit Patch why'd you do that? You can be annoyingly brave sometimes you know that?" I force a smirk on my face to try to lighten up the situation. A small smile forms on his face.
"I can't help that I'm so heroic," he sneaks out a laugh but winces in pain. Even now he still manages to joke.
"It hurts," he chokes out as a few tears roll down his cheeks. I realize I'm crying too.
"I know Patch, shhhhh. You're okay. Why couldn't you just let me die," I ask guilty.
"Don't- don't talk like that!" He snaps back, wincing in pain.
"You still have a-a fa-family to take care o-of."
His voice starts to shake and I see him fight to stay awake.
"Patch no! Patch stay with me, come on!"
"I-I'm sorry bro." His breathing gets shallower.
"Please," I choke out. I hug him close to my chest and hold back my sobs.
"You were the brother I never had," I manage to get out before pulling back to look into Patch's now lifeless eyes. Sobs erupt from my chest and I barely feel the comforting hand rubbing my back. I scream into the night sky, cursing the gods for taking his life away. Suddenly there are shouts in the distance and I'm being pulled from Patch's body.
"No! Let me go! We can't leave him! No!" I scream.
The shouts get louder and I feel an arrow rush by my ear. Through all the chaos I manage to collect my senses enough to realize who is screaming at me.
"Hiccup I'm sorry! We have to go! Im sorry! If we don't leave now then we will both die! Hiccup! We have to go!" Astrid screams at me through her desperate tears as she tries to pull me away from Patch.
"Please Hiccup! I need you! Please!" She sobs out. I quickly lean down to kiss Patch's forehead through my tears, whispering "I'm sorry," and turn back to my girlfriend who is sobbing out my name. I grab her hand and pull her up with me. My movements switch to auto pilot. My other hand automatically pulls out my firesword and snaps it on. We end up next to the dragons and I free them in an instant.
Then we're in the air heading towards Berk, leaving Patch's body behind.
