Chelsea walked to her next class with Clay so she didn't join me. I stopped at my locker to grab my car keys and English homework. Then I started towards Ms Sawyers classroom.
I walked in and there was still a student sitting in one of the desks. Ms Sawyer put a finger up to her perfect lips signaling for me to be quiet. He must've been finishing up a test or something. I sat in a desk towards the back of the room and took out my chemistry work. The student who I'm assuming was a freshman finished his work and handed it to ms Sawyer.
"Thankyou Ryan. Have a good day!" She told him, passing him a note for his teacher. He was grinning from ear to ear as he waved and left the room. Leaving me alone with her. I looked up at her and she was staring right back at me. A sad look on her face.
I started. "Ms Sawyer... I'm so sorry about texting during class today..."
She held her hand up to stop me, cutting me off.
"It's okay Shelby. I'm sorry for being so short with you. I'm dealing with some things personally and I didn't mean to take it out on you. Forgive me?" A lopsided smile was playing on her lips and I couldn't help but laugh.
"Of course I forgive you. ONLY if you never call Tony my boyfriend again!" I warned, moving to a computer chair near her desk.
"Well..." She raised an eyebrow. "The way you two were acting in the hallway between class I couldn't help but assume..."
This time I stopped her. "Well don't assume! We're friends. He's always going to have a spot in my heart, but he's too childish to handle all the fucked up things going on with me." I immediately regretting my language.
"Shit. I'm sorry. Oh my god. I did it again. I'm sooo sorry!" She threw her head back and laughed. He perfect white teeth showed and her dark brown hair cascaded over her shoulders onto her back. She was so gorgeous.
"Shelby. It's fine! There's nobody here." She grinned. I rolled my eyes. She was so cool though.
"So." She continued "what WAS that all about in the hallway then?"
Suddenly I was uncomfortable. I mean, there's nothing wrong with going to a school dance with tony as a friend, but I didn't want her to think it was anything more than that. Wait, why did I care? She was my teacher.
"Well. I told him I would go to homecoming with him... AS A FRIEND! We won homecoming court last year and its a big deal to him. If we go together it's basically a given that we will again. Even just as friends."
She furrowed her eye brows and shook her head. "You didn't strike me as the type of girl who really cared about those things..." She was right.
"I don't. But Tony's a friend and I might as well go with him. My bestfriend's going with her sorta boyfriend and they're friends so we'll be in a group. Plus Tony will leave me when we get there to dance with any chick with a short dress and low standards."
She giggled and shook her head. I swear her laugh gave me butterflies.
"Soooo... What's got you so stressed out that you snapped at your favorite student?" I knew it wasn't my business but I was curious.
"Oh you think you're my favorite student?" She played.
I rolled my eyes, "of course I am. I'm an English whiz, and the best looking chick in the school. Pretty much have the favorite student thing in the bag!" I joked.
"Well, I won't argue with that.." I wasn't expecting that response and it made me blush.
I tried to brush it off "well, come on. What is it? Boyfriend trouble?" I pressed.
She sighed. "Actually yes. Allan. We've been together for almost five years. And I just feel like we're at the end of our rope." Soo... She was seeing someone. But, obviously it wasn't going well. She continued "we've always argued, and never see eye to eye on anything. I don't know why we've stayed together this long."
I felt bad for her, she seemed to really be struggling with what to do. And I'd been through enough breakups to really know what she was experiencing. "Well, you can't force something that just isn't there anymore. Five years is a long time, and people change a lot. Maybe what you had just wasn't meant to last and it's time to move on and experience something new with someone else." I swear. I was a relationship guru.
She smiled at me, a real smile. "How are you so smart and understanding?"
I shrugged.
"I've been through a lot of breakups. A lot of failed relationships for someone my age."
She studied me a little bit before tilting her head "how old are you Shelby? You're a sophomore. So sixteen? Fifteen?"
Ugh. I hated this question. I shook my head. "I'm seventeen. I got held back in eight grade."
She looked really shocked. "But you have the best grades in any of my classes and judging by your records you excelled last year as well.."
I knew I would have to explain, but it's really not something I enjoyed talking about.
"It had nothing to do with grades or my intelligence. I was diagnosed with Diabetes towards the beginning of the school year, and it really took a toll on me. I didn't handle it right and I missed a few months of school. I was pretty depressed too and I couldn't seem to pull myself out of it. Nobody knew what to do so my parents pulled me out of school until I was better equipped to handle it all. I went back the next year when I had it under control. So. Here I am, oldest sophomore in the school. And it sucks. But I've come to terms with it and I still have all my friends." I looked up at her and I could see she felt bad, but I didn't want her pity. Or anyone's for that matter.
"Wow. I'm so sorry Shelby. That had to have been really rough. But obviously you're a strong woman to go through that and still excel in every aspect of your life. So, you have your diabetes under control now?" She questioned.
"Oh yeah, it's easier when you just accept it." I laughed it off.
"Well good. I wouldn't want to see anything happen to you, ever." She smiled. I hadn't realized how close we had gotten in the time we'd been talking. Our legs were nearly touching.
I scooted back from her out of instinct when I noticed.
We were just looking at each other for what seemed like forever but it was probably only a few seconds. Then the bell chimed loudly and I jumped up.
"Uhm. Well I guess I'll see you Monday," I grabbed my books and bag. "Bye Ms Sawyer!" And I left. Not giving her a chance to say anything in return.
What the hell was I doing? Why did I tell her all of that? Why did she tell me about Allan? Did I really want to become friends with a teacher? That's so weird. I pushed all those thoughts aside when I saw Chelsea rushing towards me.
She nearly jumped on top of me.
"Hey slut, sooo the party tonight? Are we dressing casual or sexy? Am I still coming over to get ready with you?"
I had completely forgotten that it was Friday and we were going to the local college for a party with some of our other friends.
"Sexy. Definitely sexy. And of course you're coming over idiot." I smirked. I was so excited to let loose and have some fun. Maybe I would meet someone and hook up. I knew that thought wasn't even on Chelsea's mind. The only thing on her mind was Clay. And since he would be at the party too, I would have to find someone else to spend my time with. Chelsea would no doubt be up his ass, making sure he didn't flirt with anyone else.
Tony would be there too. So I could at least get a laugh at him getting rejected by older college girls.
I said goodbye to Chelsea and headed home. I would probably take a quick nap considering I had three hours to burn.

I got home and pulled into my driveway. As I got out of my car I turned to look at my baby. My 2004 Toyota Celica GT. I loved my car. And I'd put a lot of work into her.
When I got inside I turned my laptop on to listen to some music. I started working on some homework when my computer chimed indicating that I had an email. Usually people don't email me so it was probably junk mail or a bill. I opened my mail and saw the senders address and a smile instantly came to my face. It was Ms. Sawyer.
***Shelby,
Thank you so much for the talk today! It meant a lot. You really are something else. Have a good weekend. See you Monday. xx Ms. Sawyer. ***
Whoa. xx? That's kisses right? Why would she email me this? When she could've just told me Monday? That's weird. I wasn't sure if I should respond or not so I decided not too.
I must've fallen asleep because Chelsea was banging on my door. I jumped up and let her in.
"What the hell Shelb?! You seriously fell asleep. You're such an asshole." She complained pulling her bag into my room. She took out her hair straightener and makeup and threw everything on my bed.
The only time my room was ever messy was when Chelsea was here. I sighed.
"Sorry. Help me find something to wear. I want to look good tonight."
She looked at me and shook her head. "Babe. You always look good." I smiled and pushed her. She was such a flirt.
I decided on super tight black skinny jeans and a grey laced back tube top. I straightened my long dark hair and did my makeup pretty dramatic. I looked good and I knew it. This was the first party of the school year and I wanted to make an impression.
"Holy fuck. You look sexy. You're totally gonna hook up tonight. You slut." Chelsea joked. But she was right. I was gonna hook up. I'm just wasn't sure who with yet.
We got into my car and I started driving with Chelsea's GPS assistance. After about a half hour we pulled up to the crowded house. People were everywhere. On the balcony, in the yard, streets, even on the roof. This was going to be fun. We walked up and I could tell I was gaining a lot of attention.
"Damn... Why did I ever let you go?" I heard Tony's voice behind me and turned around. Clay pulled Chelsea in for a hug and kissed her cheek, awe.
I slapped Tony's shoulder.
"Because you knew you weren't enough for me." I semi-joked.
He handed me a red solo cup, "vodka and grape soda, just for you." He knew me so well. I thanked him and turned to look at the crazy crowd of people.
That's when I saw him. Piercing blue eyes looking right at me. He grinned and nodded his head at me. I couldn't help but bite my lip. He was the most gorgeous guy id ever seen. Holy shit. He was coming towards me.
