Chapter 18: Split Up

Start from the beginning

I walk over to the tape and examine it to see who's voice it is.

"'Lacie Benton'" I say.

"Never heard of her." Alice replies.

"I think I may have, but I don't remember." Sammy says, still staring at that. . . Thing.

I press play.

A male voice speaks, we look at each other. Guess it wasn't a she. . .

"The only thing that works 'round here is my ucler." ( "I don't even want to know what that is." Alice says, we ignore her)

"Half these people don't know a wrench from a dang steamroller! Buncha morons is what they are, spend their days in the warehouse arguin' over who's supposed to be doing what or playing them silly games."

"Still, I'm not complainin'. I get most of my time to myself."
"Suits me just fine."
"The only thing that bothers me is that mechanical demon in the corner. Bertrum's been working on that for a month now."
"Says it'll walk some day and maybe dance."
"All it does now is give me the creeps." He says, sighing.
"I swear, when my back's turned. . . That thing's movin'."

We look at it. I decide to pull out the Seeing Tool, I look at where the mechanical demon is.

"'It never moves'." I say out loud, the other three look at me.
"There's a hidden message, that's what it says."
Sammy grabs the tool and looks at it.
"Yep, she's right." He says as he hands it back to me.
I look around the room for any more messages, there aren't any.

I do check the hallway though, in front of the cage, written on the floor.

"It looks like there was someone in this case at one point." I say, handing Alice the tool.

"'Please don't cry'. Perhaps a Lost One?" She hands the tool to Tom, who after looking at it hands it to Sammy, who then hands it back to me.
"Thats what I'm thinking." He says while giving it to me.

We head to the other hallway, it leads to a dead end that has a shelf in it, with a singular can of empty bacon soup. No messages there.

We head back to the balcony, I look around it for any more messages. I find one on the floor.
