Traveling through the dark I found a deer ]— Traveling through the Dark by Will Stafford
standing by the river under the moonlight
it looked up at me.
And for the longest time
that's all it did,
stare at me.
And I stared back.
And as if she was not at all scared by my presence
she went back to drinking the water.
All of a sudden,
I find myself standing by the deer
over the water
staring at our reflections
and it staring back.
When I moved, the deer moved.
When the deer moved, I moved.
But our reflections—
our reflections stood as still as the water it laid on.
Didn't even bother to imitate our movements.
But it did however,
share the same confused look as us
when they saw that we weren't imitating them.
