Marianne crept down the stairs and into the kitchen, her candle clutched tightly in one hand. The cold draft from beneath the door, caused her nightgown to flutter around her bare ankles. Not for the first time, she cursed her brother for staying out late.

She pulled back the heavy bolt.

The door burst open and Nicholas fell into the room, panting heavily. His eyes glittered beneath the black mask.

"They were waiting for me!" He gasped, pulling off the mask. "I had a narrow escape-"

The sound of hooves clattering into the courtyard froze the blood in their veins.
