Hours later, the soldier hadn't said a word while the truck sped us over inclines and winding roads. To keep from going mad, I'd been trying to control my breathing while listening to the gentle rattle of my shackles.

My skinny jeans were stained in other people's blood and my sweater had been ripped in the attack, leaving me chilly. The electricity that I'd gotten used to swirling through my veins had retreated to the depths of my bones (or worse, it wasn't working) and I felt weak.

"Hey," the soldier spoke up, startling me out of my funk to look up. "You ready?"

"For what?" I croaked, quirking a brow with the last of my energy.

"For this next part?" He said, reaching up to pull off his mask.

"Dude, if you're going to murder me," I sighed, looking away. "Just do it. We don't need to chit-chat."

"You've been a prisoner too long," he chuckled, lowering his head to his reverberating chest. "Cyrus said you might be like this."

My head snapped up to find a good-natured smile on the man's handsome face as he regarded me.

"Whatever he sees in you, it better be worth it," he remarked in a subtle French accent, unfolding himself to his full height.

My neck craned back to take in the sight of him as he stepped toward me.

"I don't know what's going on."

"I know," he replied with a touch of humor.

The man knelt down, his balance unaffected by the occasional bounce of the truck. "You saved my brother, I'm returning the favor."

"I don't need any favors," I told him, scooting away and leaning into a turn.

"You do if you're going to get us out of this armored vehicle," he laughed. "I certainly can't do it alone, and I don't want to spend any more time with these people."

"Dude, I can't," I snapped. "My powers aren't working."

"Perhaps this will help?" He reached a burly hand out to clasp it down on my arm.

A potent jolt rushed to overload my senses and I called out in shock as my entire body twitched to life. The truck swerved suddenly, whipping us both apart as we tumbled with the force of its fishtail.

"What did you do?" I hollered, trying to pull myself up from the heap I'd landed in.

"Hold on to my hand!" The man cried, stretching his palm out.

"What's going on back there?" A harsh yowl from the cab sounded over the screeching breaks.

I rolled out of the soldier's reach as we skidded to a stop but twisted around to strain in his direction. The doors slammed up front.

As soon as our skin touched the power inside me burst free again, coursing through my body like a crowd on Molly at Mardi Gras. My extremities glowed an enticing cobalt with an intensity that was on the verge of uncontrollable.

Angry voices coalesced at the rear doors of the truck as my palms erupted like two sonic jet engines. The catastrophic strike that followed blasted the doors off their hinges, smashing the bodies on the other side as they exploded open.

The vehicle was rocketed forward with the vigor of my squall, and we rolled apart. The moment our connection was severed, my powers withdrew with a mighty swoosh that wracked my bones.

The soldier hooted at the aftermath. "You are incredible!"

"What, the, actual, fuck is going on?" I howled over the ringing in my ears, trying to find his face in the dark.
