Reid found their aunt, had them placed in her care; Reid would visit them quite often to make sure they were ok, after awhile Reid started realizing how abusive their aunt could get, and then the aunt was arrested multiple times and finally put in jail for multiple accounts of assault.
Alec was taken off of their aunts custody and Reid placed them in a foster home of a person he knew would keep Alec safe. Reid continued to visit them. On alecs 15th birthday, their foster parent: John Delancey, was murdered, by a serial killer who was on a spree. Therefore, dragging Alec into the investigation.
Reid brought the case to emily and she accepted it. so the BAU started working on it.
