"i like the way you think"

Start from the beginning

"I'm just not hard to please, is all," I told Calum as I climbed into bed beside him. "Let's see," I said, grabbing the remote before laying back. I purposely situated myself so that I was fairly close to Calum and I couldn't help but feel silly as I pulled a trick that I hadn't used since high school.

I was seriously out of my element with this whole dating thing. I was severely rusty.

To my surprise, Calum readjusted himself so that he was closer as well, causing our shoulders to touch. I glanced over at him to see him looking at me and I couldn't help but let out a quiet laugh.

"We could watch a Christmas movie? But that might make me sad, since the holiday is over and everything. Or we could watch a horror movie, since Halloween is the next holiday that actually matters. It's not like New Years movies exist, after all. Or we could just watch a comedy to get out comedic fill..."

"Is there anymore options?" Calum asked, curious to see what I'd say off the top of my head.

"Well... we could watch a classical drama. Or a documentary." Calum found my last option funny and I smiled at the sound of his laugh. "There's documentaries about all of the above."

"The possibilities really are endless, huh?" I nodded and tilted my head ever so slightly so that it was resting against Calum's shoulder. He maneuvered us so that I was fully leaning back against his left side, and I was happy that he had done so. He placed his arm around me and I began to reach peak comfort. "You really don't have a preference?"

"Not really," I told Calum with a shrug. "We could watch a romantic comedy and learn a couple things?" I jokingly suggested, but was surprised to see Calum become intrigued.

"Let's do it," Calum told me with a nod. "I haven't watched a good rom-com in ages... so why not?"

"I'm down," I said with a smile. I started to go through the different options of romantic comedies and after a couple minutes of searching, we decided on When Harry Met Sally. It was a personal favorite of mine and Calum told me he had never seen it, so I figured it would suffice. "This movie is frustrating, okay? Just as a heads up. It sort of drives me crazy... and every time I watch it, I get more upset with Harry and Sally. But! I think it's quite beautiful, in a strange way. Like, the whole time I'm thinking to myself, Harry needs to get a couple things through his thick skull! While also thinking, Sally really oughta get her rear in gear! But... things work themselves out by the end every time." Calum couldn't help but laugh as I spoke and that caused me to smile.

"The ending's always the same?" Calum asked.

"Yeah, isn't that crazy? How do they get it so perfect every time?" Calum continued to smile before leaning forward and kissing my cheek, which caused me to blush. I turned to him and placed my lips on his, just as I started the movie.

Calum kissed me back, but harder than I had expected. I placed my hand on his cheek and leaned into him as we continued. I eventually rolled myself over and straddled Calum's waist as we continued. His hands found their way to my back and I held his face in my hands. I pulled away from Calum for a second, my lips curling into a smile as his eyes fluttered open to look into my own.

"You're missing important information," I joked with him as I referred to the movie.

"I hate to say it, but I don't think I care." In a swift motion, Calum rolled us over so that he was towering over me and I found myself letting out an excited giggle. He smiled just before leaning down and reconnecting our lips. His hands found my own and he interlocked our fingers as he kept my hands on either side of my head.

He pulled his lips away from mine and began trailing kisses down my jaw, to my neck. I breathed in heavily as he continued and was somewhat surprised when he began to suck on the skin at the base of my neck. I moaned quietly at the feeling and Calum let out a contented laugh, which caused me to smile. Calum finished and looked up at me as I bit my lip. He leaned down at pecked my lips tenderly before rolling off me. "Emerson, we're missing the whole movie!"

"You tease," I muttered through a laugh as I looked over at Calum. He sent me a wink before wrapping his arms around me and pulling me into his chest. I couldn't help but smile in complete satisfaction at the warmth that Calum's embrace provided me. I found it both strange and wonderful that I was experiencing his company, and I couldn't help but hope that I would genuinely be getting used to it. "We're starting it over—the beginning is incredibly important."

"Okay," Calum said as I started the movie from the beginning.

"You're not the type to ask a lot of questions during movies, are you?" I asked Calum as I repositioned myself in his arms slightly, just to have a better view of the television.

"Depends... is it a dealbreaker?" Calum asked which caused me to laugh.

"A couple questions is okay... I'm just not trying to be with someone who asks a question after every other line."

"Then we're in good shape—I'll maybe ask two or three questions." I told Calum that I could live with that and we both tuned in as the movie began. We were about three minutes in when Calum moved a little closer to my ear before speaking quietly. "What do you think you would've thought of me if we weren't forced on a blind first date?"

"My first impression of you was hot... and I don't think that would've changed." Calum snickered and I smirked as I kept my eyes looking toward the screen. "What about you? What would you have thought about me?"

"Eh, I probably wouldn't have given you a second thought."

"Calum!" I exclaimed as I sat up and smacked his shoulder as I turned toward him. He began to laugh loudly and although it was clear he was joking, I wasn't going to let him off too easily.

"I'm kidding! Are you serious? If we were friends or something first, I probably would've spent years crushing on you before ever owning up to my feelings and acting on them." My eyes rolled and I plopped back down in Calum's arms. "I can still barely believe this whole thing is mutual."

"You make no sense, Calum."

"You make no sense," Calum told me before kissing the top of my head. "You really haven't been a relationship since college?"

"Nope," I told Calum through a sigh. "I've fooled around with a couple guys but never because I was interested... does that make me lousy?"

"No, I'd say that makes you human." Calum started to play with my hair and I breathed in deeply. "You're not secretly stringing me along, though... are you?"

"Oh, shut up," I said through a laugh. "I don't plan to sleep with any of your friends, either."

"Ouch," Calum whimpered which caused me to giggle quietly. "Fresh wound, Emerson."

"Fresh?"

"Okay... not fresh, but not completely healed."

"My apologies," I told Calum before turning my head to the side and kissing his cheek. We both went back to watching the movie, but Calum eventually disrupted the silence.

"This is nice."

"What is?" I asked Calum.

"Just being here... with you... like this." I smiled at Calum's words as my butterflies fluttered in my stomach. "I could get used to it, is all."

"Let's make a habit out of it then, shall we?"

"That sounds like the dream, Emerson."
