Chapter 5
Wednesday and Thursday breezed by without any major interruptions to my fragile little mind. When I purposely didn’t do homework for Ms. Griffin’s class not once did she ask “Why didn’t you do your homework?” Even though I have a hinting suspicion she won’t be asking that question anytime soon. Mr. Hughes continued class as usual while Jazzy and I plotted potential senior pranks. She was thrilled with my ideas because let’s face it, after almost 3 years of being a senior I’ve seen them all. Gym was a little more difficult for the obvious reasons but since we switched to lacrosse, another sport I am not very fond of, it wasn’t so bad. Mr. Lewis’s physics class was boring enough so no complaints there. Luckily Jazzy had detentions the rest of the week as well thanks to her little comment about his “sexual preference” so I wasn’t alone with Mr. Richman.
It was Friday and the weekend was a little over an hour away. The bell rang signaling the end of the day and I headed to my locker to put my books away. I told Jazzy that I’d meet her in detention so I had a little alone time to myself to think. Walking through the English wing I saw a girl come out of Mr. Hughes room crying her eyes out. As she walked right past me I could tell that her crying had just begun. As I passed his room I slowed down to see what, if anything, had happened. Mr. Hughes eyes met mine and he just smiled. I stopped walking and stared at him suspiciously. Not being able to take it anymore I broke eye contact and continued on my way. Reaching the classroom I sat next to Jazzy and got out my notebook. I flipped to the back and wrote down the date, time, and description of the girl. Closing the notebook I put it back in my bag and began to do homework. Jazzy and Mr. Richman were making conversation and that was fine by me, as long as I wasn’t involved.
“Hey Mr. Richman what is that around your neck?” she asked politely. The question seemed intriguing enough so I continued to eavesdrop while pretending to read my book.
“It’s a necklace?” He replied with an “as-if” tone.
“Uh, Duh? I mean is it just a black cord or is there anything on it?” She said mocking his tone of mocking her.
“Yea there’s stuff on it,” his sudden arm movement caught my eye and I glanced up noticing him taking the necklace out from under his shirt, “there’s three pendants. One is a sword, the second is a rabbit, and the third is a ring.” He finished. Looking up at the necklace I made the realization that what was on his necklace wasn’t just any ring it was the ring, the engagement ring, my ring! I strained my eyes to focus back on the paper and I covered them with my hand. I couldn’t believe it. Why would he keep that? Who would be so sick as to cheat on their fiancé and then wear the ring around their neck? Did he still care? My stomach turned over on itself as I tried to appear normal with all these thoughts spinning around my head.
Laughing hysterically Jazzy retorted, “A BUNNY? Why would you have a bunny around your neck???” Mr. Richman did not see the humor in this.
“It’s a rabbit, not a bunny, and for your information they are majestic creatures living in the wild that is the forest!” He stated a little annoyed. Not getting involved I could only hear Jazzy snort and laugh simultaneously. The detention ended, Jazzy and I said our goodbye’s with the promise of pulling off the prank of the year, and parted ways. Walking towards my car I couldn’t help but feel a little uneasy. While opening my car door I happened to glance up at the school and notice someone staring at me from the second story window. They immediately backed away leaving only the swinging curtains as a reminder that someone had been there. Getting in my car I started it up and left the school as quickly as possible. Trying to rid myself of the events of today I tried to focus my mind on the night ahead. As soon as I got into my apartment I called Jessy and told her to come on over and headed to take a shower. An hour later I looked smoking hot in my black boots, short skirt, white tank top, and leather jacket. Waiting on the couch for Jessy’s call I couldn’t help but wonder why did Brad keep my ring around his neck? The last words I spoke to him were “Forget I Exist.” Why didn’t he listen to me? It bothered me more the more I thought about it. A vibrating phone interrupted my thought process and after speaking with Jessy I was out the door running for her car. I jumped into the car seat violently and startled the hell out of her.
