Brendon grinned at me widely, and Dallon looked between the both of us with a small smile before announcing, "I'm gonna go ride on that cart again," and leaving before we could say anything.
"Well, they look good on you." Brendon said, casually veering the conversation back to my glasses.
An awkward silence ensued.
"So... uh..." I began.
"Would you like to-"
"Huh?"
"Well, we're almost done here, so I was wondering if you'd..." he stopped, flashed me a grin and giggled. "I was going to ask if you wanted to come back to my place and hang out for a bit again, but then I realized that we kind of have the same place now, don't we? Oops." He giggled once again.
"Uh, yeah, sure! Sounds g-"
A loud crash sounded behind us, and I turned around to find Dallon sheepishly grinning up at an employee next to a pile of collapsed tomato soup cans and an upturned grocery cart. He looked to Brendon and me with a face that pleaded for help all in itself. Giving a deep sigh, Brendon walked over to the worker and began trying to explain his band mate's behavior while I just crossed my arms with a subtle smirk, amused at the whole situation unfolding before me.
After a couple of minutes of compromising, Brendon jogged back over to me and shot me another smile. "Sorry about that, Dallon... well, clearly is still hung over."
Laughing with him for a couple of seconds just caused another awkward silence, but I was saved by my phone buzzing in my pocket.
Brendon motioned for me to feel free to answer, and I put up a finger to say, "One minute."
As I turned away, I pulled my phone out to find that it was another call from Jenna.
"Hello?"
"ALEX!" She let out a dramatic sigh of relief. "I HAVEN'T TALKED TO YOU IN TEN YEARS."
"Oli, it's been less than 24 hours." Despite our friendship sort of moving on from our interest in bands, old habits die hard.
"Yeah, but-"
"Speaking of Oli Sykes!" I lowered my voice. "You would never guess who I ran into yesterday."
"What? Who?" I could practically hear her racking her brain for who it could be.
"Brendon."
"You're kidding me."
"Nope. Apparently we live in the same apartment building. How fucked is that?"
"LIFE, WHY MUST YOU BE SO CRUEELL?"
Looking back to Brendon to make sure he didn't hear, I nervously smiled and saluted two fingers as a wave.
"Quiet down! I'm actually... uh. I'm with him now."
"ALEXANDRIA ELISE BARHAM, WHAT?!"
Brendon began walking over to me. "Sorry, gotta go, byee!"
"DON'T YOU D-"
Click.
"Everything okay over here?"
"Uh-huh!" I responded, my voice an octave higher than usual.
"Oh-kay," he chuckled. We walked back over to Dallon together, who was giggling uncontrollably on the ground still. Brendon put out his hand and helped him up, commenting something like, "Immature asshole."
We continued walking before he smacked his hand against his forehead. "Fuck! I forgot, we have a party to go to tonight!"
"...we?" I asked, my spirits already going down. Of course, he has a girlfriend. I should have known.
"Yeah, we! Patrick, Pete, Spencer, Dallon... y'know?"
"Oh! Right! Totally forgot."
But maybe... another night? We could hang out, catch up a bit more? Not at three in the morning?"
I laughed. "Yeah, yeah, of course."
"Alright. See you around, Lex."
"See you, Bren."
I got back home and collapsed on my white couch. What just happened? My phone buzzed in my pocket again, and I pulled it out, frowning. Another text from Jenna? I opened it, my facial expression going from bored to shocked within two seconds.
