In sickness and in health

Start from the beginning

I think it's safe to say I'm crying.

I don't know what it is with me and weddings, but you can take me to a stranger's wedding and I will still cry. Happy tears, of course. But I can never get over how pure a wedding is and how pure the love of two people is at a wedding.

"Do you both pledge to share your lives openly with one another, and to speak the truth in love? Do you promise to honor and tenderly care for one another, cherish and encourage each other, stand together, through sorrows and joys, hardships and triumphs for all the days of your lives?"

"We do," they said in sync.

"Do you, Madeline, take William to be your lawfully wedded husband? Do you promise to take him and stay by his side, in sickness, and in health?"

"I do."

"Do you, William, take Madeline to be your lawfully wedded wife? Do you promise to take her and stay by her side, in sickness, and in health?"

"I do."

"Go now in peace and live in love, sharing the most precious gifts you have- the gifts of your lives united. And may your days be long on this earth. I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

We all watched them as they performed their first dance. No one else was here to them, they were lost within each other, dancing with huge smiles on their faces as they swayed lightly and talked to each other in faint whispers. They chose Thinking Out Loud as the song for their first dance. I know it's Madeline's favorite. She's always wanted that song to be the one for her first dance.

After their first dance, everyone grabbed a partner and joined them. I didn't want a partner, or to dance so I grabbed myself a seat and sat down, watching everyone else.

"Can I have a dance?" I looked up and saw Liam.

"I thought you were bringing Rachel to the wedding?" I asked in confusion.

"I asked her to come but she said she didn't want to show up uninvited. She's trying to change," he gave me a small shrug.

"Rachel said that?" I asked because that is quite unbelievable.

"Believe it or not," he chuckled, still holding his hand out for me to take.

"All right," I shrugged before placing my hand in his. I stood up and walked with him to the dance floor. He put his arms on my waist and I placed my hands on his shoulders while we swayed slightly.

"Nick seemed a little miserable these past few days, everything okay now?" he asked while arching a brow at me.

"We're getting there," I nodded slowly.

"That's good, you two are seriously perfect for each other," he laughed.

"Really? We seem to fight a lot," I chuckled.

"Yeah, but that's how it is, isn't it? Bottom line, you two make each other happier than anyone else can. Isn't that what counts?" he questioned. He is right.

I looked around the room and my eyes landed on Nick who was sitting at a table, looking bored out of his mind, trying not to stare at Liam and me. "I gotta go," I mumbled, giving him a small smile before he nodded and let me go. I walked over to Nick while taking a deep breath. I stood in front of him while he continued acting like I wasn't there. "Hey," I sighed.

"Hey," he looked up at me, his voice blank.

"Dance with me?" I questioned, holding my hand out for him to grab.

"Why don't you dance with Liam?" he scoffed.

"I did, but he seems to think we're perfect for each other," I sighed. He looked at me questioningly. "I seem to agree," I shrugged, "You wanna dance with me or not? I can just go back to Liam," I said nonchalantly.

"It doesn't seem like you want to dance with me," he gave me a pointed look.

"Please, Nick? Come on?" I whined.

He sighed while biting back a smile before grabbing my hand and standing up. He grabbed a rose from the little vase that was sitting in the middle of the table and placed it behind my ear after breaking the stem, making it shorter.

"Nick," I sighed while grabbing another rose from another table, breaking the stem and placing it in the pocket of his tux. "Don't you think we fight a lot?" I asked as we danced slowly.

"I think we fight unnecessarily, but I also think we make each other the happiest. I have some of the best memories of my life with you, Emma. I'd do anything to keep us alive and going. I want us to last," he gave me a small shrug.

"How long?" I questioned while looking up at him.

"Forever, that's as long as it gets," he smirked.

"Things don't last forever, Nick," I sighed.

"They do if you take care of them. Till death, that's forever to anyone alive," he shrugged.

"You wanna stay with me till we're dead?" I laughed.

"At least till we're eighty-five," he shrugged.

"And how are we gonna stay together till we're eighty-five if we argue so much?" I arched an eyebrow at him.

"Simple," he said, "We communicate and then get married."
