BRANWEN

"My shining teeth and me... "

The video playing in the background was very loud as I danced in my pink bathroom, trying to hype myself up for the first day back to school. Somehow the first day jitters were still running through my veins because I was up at six in the morning, not able to sleep.

"I think there's something wrong with my head." I whispered to my reflection before grinning and continuing to dance. Who the heck gets this excited about school? Me apparently.

A couple of years ago, after a family incident occurred, I inserted myself into school and away from people. School was one of the few things I enjoyed in life, that is, besides looking at the stars. I noticed that my amazing dance moves were starting to slow down and I'm not about to let stupid thoughts distract me from now.

I had packed my backpack and gotten dressed already so I was now in the process of brushing my teeth and hair all at once. Somehow the volume couldn't be loud enough.

"Bran! Can you turn that down please? It's seven in the morning for God's sake!" Mom yelled from down the stairs.

I froze, the hairbrush directly pointed to my mouth. "Sorry!"

Immediately I hopped over to the speakers next to my full size bed and turned the music down, but continued to shimmy back to the bathroom.

This year, school was going to be amazing and there was nothing that was going to bring that down. After turning off the sink, I headed down the stairs where my mother was waiting with a blonde brow lifted. I skipped around the table to give Mom a kiss on the cheek while she turned back to flipping buttermilk pancakes on the stove. She had a "Moms Rule" apron on and was humming underneath her breath some sort of song, perhaps a hymn. I slid onto the metal seat and tapped my fingers on the table, listening to the sound of birds chirping outside.

"Junior year, huh." Mom shook her head. "I can't believe it. Soon you'll be out of here and into college."

On the island, there weren't any colleges dealing with astronomy. "Oh Mom, stop being silly. We'll always be close, as long as we stick together."

She gave me a look. "I think you're just stating something twice."

"Don't worry, it's going to be alright." I smiled widely at her as she brought over the syrup covered pancakes.

"That's right sweetheart. Now tell me, what are your plans?"

I began to cut into my dreamy pancake as I pondered over my goals. "Well, you know I want to go into astronomy, so I'm taking Physics and the astronomy elective school offers. Did you know that this year they're planning a night under the stars event?"

Her brows rose. "Really? That should be something you're looking forward to."

"We'll see. I'm not so sure yet."

"Why not?" She frowned.

"I can see the stars perfectly from our house. If I want to sleep outside, I'll do it with you."

Mom made an "o" with her mouth in understanding. "Well, just make sure. You will be with professionals and teachers there to teach you more."

"I'll think on it."

By the time I had finished my breakfast and talk with mom, the time for school had already arrived. I quickly said bye to her, hopped on my midnight blue colored bike and rode in the wind.
