Back to the present. Esca's POV.
I entered class looking sleepier than I had ever been. This was the second last week of our school year and next year we will be adults going to prepare for university. Last night I was 'thrilled' with a group call from Sonny and Josh, arguing about how beautiful Dark Vader would be as a girl. It was chiefly Josh conceding with himself certainly. Sonny solely groaned along with me on the phone.
Heather was reckoned to join the call but she, and Henry, her twin had family plans. I spotted her short blond ends of her hair facing her phone in her seat next to mine. My 'very' stubborn brother was in my seat talking to Henry. Those two were pretty tight friends despite Edgar being a year above us, he's turning 17. This is his last high school year. Following him, Sonny turned 16, a month older than Heather and Henry who are his same age presently.
Thereby, me being the youngest, will turn 16 next August.
"Can you rush to your class? I'm starting to think you're forming a gay side, with the way you're hanging out with Henry over here," I commented, stumbling down on him as my seat. Edgar's hair was ever smooth enough for me to disorganize, so I did so before he whacked my hand away.
"And good morning to you, Ms. Opposite." Henry teased peeking at me from the corner of his curly haired vigil. He had blond ends on his hair that compliment his tanned skin
Heather was nice enough to give me a side hug before Edgar split us up, to peep at what Heather was doing on her phone.
"New guy already? Is that Steve from my class?" he asked, earning a thud to his head from her.
I blocked out their argument, trying to be oblivious to boyfriend issues which always failed.
"Hello. Where were you?" He emphasized the you to point me out.
"Sonny, I was trying to wash off the sleep I didn't enjoy before the lesson."
I looked up at him from my bag. He was in white snickers, black jeans and a grey trinity signed shirt. As usual, hands in his pockets and smirking down at me.
"You know you could have hung up, I'm very sure I slept through the three-hour call." he snickered at my expression of betrayal. Edgar got me off him to go nearer to Heather and Henry's desks.
I pulled out my books for the first lesson after checking the time for the last 8 minutes before Mr. Derrick enters.
" But you really look tired. After class, we'll do the next assignment together, so you can head straight home for a nap." his eyes staring at my hair.
"Don't stare!" I whined, trying to rake out the over curled tips of my bun. Sonny reached out to tuck my crazy hair into a better bun. I never mind what my hair looks like most times. It's either Mum or Sonny who help me make it look better. I cut it last year but it still grows as fast as my nails.
Mr. Derick cut us short. Sonny magically seemed to be sat on his seat which was always behind mine. We sat in a format that would give us more time to pay attention in class. My seat in front of Sonny's, Heather to my left and Henry behind her. There was always an empty seat besides Henry, that we used to make bets on what Mrs. Humfrey would ware the next weeks. Thankfully we grew out of that and metamorphosed to bet on more serious things; the next best chef on chopped, the most jokes Mr. Gabriel would make in the class. Yeah, we were pretty mature.
The next lesson we had was the most boring on Mondays. I watched Heather read the message she received and I had never seen what I had seen in this lesson. She tried to pay attention but, I could see tears clouding over her eyes. Her eyes tried to glance at me probably to assure me she is fine. But one tear betrayed her glance, she immediately looked away.
"Excuse me!" She exhaled, standing up, and abruptly her tears are wiped. She was out of the room as hastily as she could. I flickered away from her to Henry. And he allotted me a signal. A grin crept up on my face, and I looked behind to get a glimpse of Sonny. He was in on it.
