Growlithe...
even though growlithe was the only fire-type pokemon in her home, Ashlynn had developed an early interest in fire Pokemon, that didn't mean that she didn't like or did not want to train other pokemon types, it was just that they seemed cool and more likeable to her for till date, unknown reasons.
her second favourite was ghost type so...
Growlithe was always an energetic and naughty friend of hers who loved to roll in mud, play tag and hide and seek for hours nonstop, chase beautifly in orchards, swing rattatas by the tail and being by her side all the time, he even shared her bedroom since god knows when and was closer to her than any other pokemon and maybe even Axel now. both of them looked out for each other and were always loyal, if growlithe didn't accompany her on her journey, her journey would have no meaning altogether, because her love for pokemon had only evolved because of that one pokemon.

Growlithe had grown more close to her when one day when a pack of houndours and houndooms had cornered Ashlynn in the woods in the outskirts of the city and she thought she was trapped alone, until growlithe jumped in between her and the packs and growled at them to back off, even though they growled back, growlithe didn't move an inch which was very brave since the howls of houndooms scare any pokemon or human to run away into safety and inspire fear into them which doesn't ebb away for hours... as it did for her.
She was very scared, because she was afraid that they might hurt growlithe which they did, the leader mega houndoom who looked quite scary with his long, curved and raked horns, it came out front and growled eerily, but when growlithe didn't back away, it scratched at him which caused a long, deep scar on his eye which burned red, growlithe whimpered, but stood back up again and growled back, probably trying to use his move intimidate, but it wouldn't work effectively as there were many in the pack. the mega houndoom got angry by growlithe's daring to use an intimidate move at them that it flame throwed at him, even Ashlynn would have been hurt by it but growlithe took it all upon himself and attacked back with double the force of flame throw at them all, such force came in his move because growlithe got strengthened a bit by flash fire technique which doubles his move upon being hit by a fire type move and so they all backed away, confused by it.
Growlithe was weak on its legs so Ashlynn picked him up and ran back as fast as she could at home, a couple of pokemon from the pack were chasing her but she didn't stop, as she came out of the woods, they stopped chasing her and Ashlynn took growlithe back home and nursed him along with Axel.
that day, she realised three things:
1) growlithe cared about her and was a very loyal friend.
2) growlithe was quite a strong pokemon to be able to fend such a wild pack of houndooms.
3) she really wanted to be a careful pokemon master, not a deliberate one.
on the bright side, now growlithe was immune to fire attack injuries, being trained by it at such a young age...
she was of about six then and growlithe was only one.
