Sam tried to ignore the boy sitting next to him, but it was hard, saying as said boy seemed to say a new thing every few seconds.
"Psst!" he hissed, making some students glare at him. "What's the answer to number four?"
They'd been doing the worksheet the teacher had passed out to them for just over 10 minutes now, and Gabriel had not shut up. They were supposed to work on it independently, and if he continued talking, he was eventually going to get them both in trouble.
Sam sighed, and ripped off a piece of notebook paper. Quickly, in his near-perfect handwriting, he wrote: We shouldn't be talking.
When the teacher's back was turned, he slid the note over to Gabriel, and watched as he read the note. For a second, Gabriel's eyebrows furrowed in concentration and disappointment. When he looked over at Sam, his eyes were full of so much pain Sam almost felt bad for him.
Unable to hold his gaze any longer, Sam turned back to his paper, and practically tried to burn a hole through it with his eyes. He hadn't meant to hurt the kid's feelings, it's just that if he got in trouble, neither dad nor Dean would let him live it down.
"Sorry," he heard the boy mumble sadly under his breath. Sam sneaked a glance over at him and instantly regretted it. The note Sam had given him was grasped tightly in his hand, and his eyes were squeezed tightly, as if he was trying not to cry.
Sam sighed. He wasn't supposed to make friends, but...
He hurriedly tore off another piece of notebook paper and wrote a message on it. Reading it over quickly, he gathered his courage and passed it to Gabriel. Making a friend wouldn't hurt anybody, right? As long as Dean and his father didn't find out, it should be fine.
Gabriel's eyes lit up as he read over the piece of paper. He tilted his head towards Sam, and smiled brightly, hitting Sam with his infectious happiness. Sam smiled back, before looking away, suddenly very shy. He hadn't written much on the paper, just one word: Lunch?
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Gabriel smile and go back to his worksheet with a seemingly newfound energy. His dirty blond hair fell into his eyes, but he quickly brushed it away.
Sam tried to get excited too, but he couldn't.
What had he gotten himself into?
A/N- Okay, so that chapter was super short, but.... they are gonna have lunch together! It's progress!
