Your blaring alarm woke you the next morning and you felt less refreshed than you had before you'd even gone to bed. You groaned, slapping it to turn it off as you turned back towards Sherlock, who was still asleep. You envied him for sleeping through the alarm. You laid in bed for a moment longer before you groaned, knowing you'd have to get up.
You finally did, kissing Sherlock's cheek before you quickly got ready to leave. It didn't take you long to gather up your things. When you were finished getting ready, Sherlock was still sound asleep in bed. You left him, knowing he'd know you were with Mary.
When you got up to Mary's hospital room she was already awake, the small girl in her arms. Her and John hadn't agreed on a name yet, so the newborn girl didn't yet have a title.
"Hey." She whispered through an exhausted smile. John was asleep in a chair nearby, and he looked totally drained, more so than Mary did. You always wondered why men always seemed more tired than their partners who had given birth.
"Hey." You peered leerily down at the small baby in her hands. She looked peaceful in her mother's arms as she was sound asleep. You weren't going to lie, the small child freaked you out a little bit. She was so delicate and tiny.
"Want to hold her?" Mary saw your look and you shook your head.
"Oh, no thanks. I'm not the best with kids." You told her as you stepped back, raising your hands in a way that told her no.
"Oh, come on! You'll love her and she'll love being held. Go on." Mary held the tiny bundle up towards you and you looked at the baby, not feeling so sure. After receiving Mary's confident smile you caved, taking the newborn from her arms.
You held her, careful not to hurt her, aware of every move you were making. After looking down at her sleepy face, you relaxed a bit. This wasn't so bad... she was peaceful and kinda cute... okay, she was adorable.
"See, you're a natural." Mary watched you hold her child and smiled up at your unbelieving look. You even got a little excited as you held the girl longer in your arms. Something about her just twisted at your heartstrings. You'd never known anyone who'd had a baby, well not anyone close enough to you or your family to be so open about it. So, this was one of your first true experiences with a newborn.
"She's adorable." You smiled, holding your hand out towards her teeny tiny one. Even in her sleep, she wrapped her hand tightly around your finger out of instinct. "And she's got a strong grip." You grinned, bouncing softly as you held her.
"Kids aren't so bad." Mary told you with a smile as she watched you interact with her new child.
"Maybe not." You gave her a sideways glance as you continued to watch the sleeping baby. Suddenly, the baby seemed to stir and had an upset look on her face. She let out a soft cry, her eyes screwed shut. It was the softest and cutest cry ever. You were sure only newborns could make crying cute.
"Oh, time for mommy again." You bounced her softly as you brought her to Mary. Mary smiled, taking her back into her arms.
"She must just want her father." Mary grinned. "John!" John shot awake, looking around the room in a slight panic.
"What!" He shouted before he realized where he was. "Oh, hey Y/n." He yawned, scratching the back of his head. His hair stood up in multiple directions and he had marks etched into his face where his face had been pressed into the chair. You gave him a small wave.
"Walk? Me and Y/n need to chat." She told him, holding the crying girl towards him.
"Oh, yeah. Right." He nodded, taking the small girl from her arms. As John scooped her up and began walking, her quiet cries diminished. You raised your eyebrows as you watched John leave the room with the now quiet baby.
