Part 2: The High Road

"Elena!" Stefan called out to her as she ran away from the ball. She turned around and sighed.

"What do you want Stefan?" Elena ground out, irritated. Stefan's face fell. Have I caused her so much pain that she doesn't even want to talk to me? He thought frowning.

"What did Esther want to talk about?" Stefan asked quietly, looking down with sad eyes.

"She wanted to kill the originals, but I think I just stopped her." Elena admitted, her eyes started to water and her voice cracked slightly.

Stefan's face turned into an angry snarl as he growled, "why would you do that!?"

Elena lost her temper as her eyes narrowed and she pursed her lips.

"I don't know, Stefan. Maybe because in all of this, Klaus was the only one that treated like a was human, instead of a prize to be won or a child that needs protecting! Maybe because if I did I would have to live with the guilt for the rest of my life!" Elena started shouting, "and most of all, because the person that hurt me the most tonight... was you!"

"Elena-" he tried to apologize.

"No! Stefan I don't want to hear it! I want to go home and forget tonight ever happened." She paused, getting a look of worry in her eyes. "And tomorrow I'll deal with the consequences."

Elena picked up the bottom off her dress and ran to her car. When she got inside of the car she let out a few choked sobs before completely falling apart. She let her head fall onto the steering wheel as she cried.

"I'm so stupid" Elena scolded herself, wiping the tears away. Once she dug out her keys and started the car, she drove home.

She ran up the her room and opened the door, only to find Klaus in her room, looking out her window. He wasn't wearing his jacket, tie, or vest and his hair was slightly messed up.

"Klaus?" Elena asked, walking in and shutting the door behind her.

"Elena, I wanted to thank you..." Klaus trailed off walking towards her.

"Yeah," Elena sighed, wiping her eyes again.

"What's wrong, luv?" Klaus asked, gently grabbing her chin and forcing her to meet his gaze.

"Everything." Elena sighed, sprawling across her bed.

"Can I do anything to help?" Klaus offered, leaning against her door.

"Why are you being so nice?" Elena snapped, sitting up and looking at him with narrow eyes. "Are you planning to kill me or something?"

"You saved my life, and I figured that I owe you." Klaus shrugged, sitting next to her.

"Yeah," Elena agreed smiling, "I have an idea!"

She ran down to the kitchen as he followed her. She went to the cabinet and took out a bottle of vodka a bottle of bourbon and two glasses.

"Let's get drunk and forget the entire night." Elena suggested, holding up the bottle of vodka and glasses. Klaus smirked, grabbing them from her hands and pouring two glasses.

A few drinks and a bottle of vodka later, Elena was drunk. Klaus was able to hold his alcohol and was only minimally affected. Elena's dress was unzipped and she kept struggling to hold it up and Klaus' shirt was entirely unbuttoned exposing his bare chest.

"You, know what?" Elena slurred, wrapping an arm over Klaus' shoulder and using the other had to drink some bourbon. Her dress nearly slipped but she held onto his with her elbow.

"What's that, luv?" Klaus asked, an amused smirk playing along his lips.

"I saved your life!" She shouted, poking his chest. "You owe me! A lot."

"Anything you want, luv," Klaus agreed, grabbing the bottle out of her hand and taking a swig.

"I want you to take me out of this town!" She sighed sitting up on the counter. "Everyone here is going to hate me when they find out and I just want to go!"

"I'll take you anywhere, you want." Klaus smiled, putting his hands on her hips and standing in between her legs. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her head in his neck. "Paris, Venice, Pompeii, anywhere you want!"

"You'd take me?" Elena asked, with a childlike smile growing across her lips.

"Of coarse," Klaus frowned, "but you probably won't remember this when your sober."

"Yuh-huh!" She pouted, crossing her arms.

"Luv, I will follow you, wherever you go. We can be together." Klaus admitted, realizing she wouldn't remember in the morning.

She nodded and smiled, "together."

"Yes," Klaus agreed, smiling. He decide he didn't want a family that tried to kill him, hybrids that weren't really loyal and he especially didn't want Caroline, who would never truly love him. Elena may have been drunk, but he could still feel the bond between them, that had started when they seen each other at the ball. He would watch her and protect her, and he would never hurt her again. He knew he didn't deserve her, but he would prove himself worthy.

"I think I like you, Elena. In one afternoon you have made me happier than I have been in decades. You won't remember any of this, though. Just remember that I am sorry for all that I have done to you." Klaus compelled Elena as she nodded and repeated a few of the words.

"Your soo nice," Elena giggled, "Stefan's not nice, he doesn't even love me anymore."

"I think it's time for bed, luv," Klaus told her, helping her off the counter. When she stood her dress fell to her feet, which revealed her black bra. Klaus couldn't help staring, and admiring her body. Grabbing her dress, he put his other hand on the small of her back and lead her to her room.

"I love it when you call me, luv."

"You're going to remember that when you're sober," Klaus grinned. He opened her door and helped Elena get into bed. He tucked her carefully under the blankets, put the dress on the window and placed a kiss on her forehead.

"Goodnight, luv." Klaus smiled, placing a piece of her hair behind her ear.

"Stay," she muttered, grabbing his hand.

"Okay... Now go to sleep," he agreed, opening the door and walking down to the living room. He took off everything except his boxers and laid down on the couch, like any gentleman would do.

The next morning Elena woke up with a major hang over. She rolled over, groaning into her pillow. She slowly sat up holding her head and squinting the light out of her eyes. She saw a water on her side table and reached for it, behind it, there was a note and a bottle of pill. She opened the letter and read:

I enjoyed last night, luv. Hope to see you again. (;
-K

Elena rubbed her eyes in confusion. K? Who's that? She thought, but then she remember Klaus coming over the night before. Why can't I remember? She continued straining her mind as she sat up. When the blanket fell, she realized she was only wearing her bra and underwear.

"No! I couldn't have? He compelled me!" Elena squealed, immediately regretting it as her head started pounding. She instantly thought that Klaus had compelled her to sleep with him. She turned the note over to find a clue of what happened after the ball. She saw writing on the back that read:

Meet me on Wickery Bridge at noon, we need to speak. Don't bring the Salvatore's.

P.S. We didn't sleep together, although you tried. (;

She sighed, falling back onto her bed in relief.
