When a baby with soulmate powers is born, they are taken to witch or wizard to have their soul copied. The copy of the soul would be turned into their dark side. Unfortunately, a witch did not agree with the idea of dark sides and got an idea. When a baby was taken to her, she would copy the soul, but also make put all of their dark emotions and thoughts in them. Her witchery became very popular, and soon every baby was taken to her to be copied. Other witches and wizards disappeared, to the witch's delight, and she taught others her method to pass on after she died. No one ever found out about the original way to copy souls. And it's been that way ever since. The dark sides were like an alive shadow. It can walk, talk, and everything a human can. But, they can appear from out of nowhere whenever a person is thinking negatively. The dark sides influence their thoughts. They can even drive them into madness, if the one with the soulmate power allows them to.
