Chapter 5. Entitled Jackass.

****

By lunch time on our second day of school, even more rumours surrounding the return of Xander had surfaced and didn't stop once he walked into the school canteen with his best friend Hudson and the girl I saw him hug on the first day, Riley, by their side.

Girls couldn't help but stare at him whether they were looking to get with him or not. He was an attractive boy and that meant he attracted glances wherever he went.

As I walked to my lunch table I heard a low murmur. I greeted Carter, a-few of the girls from the netball team and a-few boys from the soccer team before sitting down and asking them what they were discussing, obviously knowing it was to do with Xander.

"Well I heard that he paid Mr. Lewis. No way would he have gotten accepted with those grades" Johnny, our schools centre-back, whispered to avoid anyone who wasn't on our table from hearing.

"Well how true can that be?" Carter retorted.

"I'd say, pretty damn true. My grandmother told me and said that a friend of Xanders grandmother, told her"

And before I knew it, my brain was putting two and two together and getting 16.

Maybe it was because I hadn't eaten yet and tend to get extremely hangry, or maybe it was because I have quite a short temper on me and let that get the better of me. Though it was probably because it was at the expense of one of my best friends not getting in, but before I knew it Carter was glancing at me knowing what I was thinking and I was looking straight back at her.

Will had already been accepted, so that last place was his for the taking, unless the school had a last minute call for that final place to be taken by someone who could offer the school a hell of a lot of money to accept their entitled ass. And with that thought lingering, I placed down my lunch tray and walked right over to Xander.

I lightly banged my hands down on the table that he was sitting at.

"You are such a Jackass!" I exclaimed, raising my voice slightly.

"Oooo" He jokingly placed a hand on his heart.

"I like you. You're charming" Hudson quipped, amusement laced in his words.

"Your words wound me" Xander threw me an open mouthed smile, "and whilst I'm sure you're completely right, What have I done to deserve this term of endearment?" Xander mocked, his eyes shining with sarcasm as he smiled up at me.

Hudson looked completely amused, almost applauding me for getting straight to the point, whereas Riley looked concerned.

"You bought your way in!" I spoke, trying to keep my cool and not attract the eyes of everyone else in this room. With a quick confused glance at his best friends, they stepped in, defending his honour as always.

"Xander tells us everything, I'd know if he had paid to get accepted" Riley spoke, genuinely trying to get me to understand.

"He would have told us straight away, you know? try and get us in on it but we haven't been told anything. You may have bought into the wrong rumours" Hudson carried on concerned, worried I might punch his best friend square in the face. He couldn't stop looking in between Xander and I.

Riley was the newest member of our year, only joining in year 10 (the year before Xanders suspension) so I hadn't gotten to talk to her much. Hudson though, I knew from Northside and he joined Greenwood in year 7 like the rest of us. Plus, he was on the soccer team, so I had exchanged a few words with him here and there.

"Look, I get that you don't like me but I got accepted here fair and square. So take your tantrum elsewhere" Xander spoke coolly, not bothered for the drama that my presence was bringing him.

"I really dislike the person you've become" I looked down at him as he was sitting, making me seem taller. Hudson looked straight at Xander as my words were spoken but he just looked down before making eye contact with me once more.

"Thank you for your opinion. I cherish it" sarcasm laced his tone again, apparently not taking anything serious nowhere days.

"Xander" Hudson warned.

I scoffed and turned on my heels.

What the hell crawled up his ass and died.

First netball and soccer  practice of the year and I couldn't wait to get back into the swing of regular routine. I changed into my black yoga shorts and oversized white tee shirt, quickly lacing up my trainers before going to the court.

We were running regular warm up drills before the boys starting to spill out onto the field that was directly opposite our training courts. It was such a regular occurrence that none of us girls took notice of it, completely focussing on our game and not the guys running around next to us.

That was the same for me of course, until I saw a familiar brunette enter the field.

Typical.

Xander was back on the team, as if he hadn't been out of practice for the entire year. I mentally scoffed at the sight of him.

Entitled.

He had always been quite close with his team members, eating lunch with them and spending most of his high school career as a part of that friendship group alongside Hudson. However, even I could see the mental distance between him and the rest of the squad now, and the year out must have been the root of the problem. His passing was off and he wasn't communicating at all.

It's as if part of him had shut off.

I was kicked out of my thought process as Carter nudged shoulders with me.

"What's up?" She spoke, noticing my thoughts were elsewhere.

"Nothing" I dismissed it "Lets just focus on our drills" I exhaled, ready for our practice match.

By the end of both our practice and the soccer teams, we were all exhausted and ready to head home. We both merged into a big group- standard  procedure- as we walked back to our dressing rooms. I couldn't help but notice a presence next to me that wasn't Carter and sure as hell couldn't have been Wills.

"You cooled off of yet?" He joked, a double meaning as he mocked the red flush in my cheeks that came from being out of breath from training, but also referencing my outburst at him in the canteen.

"You're funny, you know that?" I exaggerated the lack of humour in my voice.

"We don't need to act like we like each other" I continued, "I know you bought your way in and I wasn't brought up to think that's okay"

"God, this again? I didn't do it. You need to chill out, Andy" he tried to diffuse the situation.

I made a face of distaste towards the nickname that suggested we were even friends.

"Well until you can admit it, we'll  just keep our pleasantries to a minimum. We don't share many classes and I won't have to see you other than practice after school. Okay?" I explained.

He scoffed, one that had hints of laughter behind it, not taking me seriously at all.

"Fine" he spoke as though he was just saying it to appease me.

Like that's going to last, I thought.
