7PM.

I paced anxiously around my room, hyper-aware of my mom's sobbing across the hall.

8PM.

I got a glass of water, but ended up dropping it and it shattered all over the floor. My mom was too preoccupied to care, and I cleaned it up--but I wouldn't stop staring at the clock.

Now it was 9:30PM. I was rolling around in my bed, trying to sleep, but the ticking of my wall clock kept me awake.. that, and my mom's loud conversation with the police downstairs.

It struck 10. Then it was 10:30. Mom was still talking with the police. Clock was still ticking. 10:33. 10:34. 10:35.

Fuck it! I yanked a coat onto myself and rushed out of my room, pushing right past the two policemen and my mom as I left the house. The breath of fresh air was everything I needed.

I walked down to the park, mindlessly kicking at the early snow. Then I turned.

Someone was waiting by the light post.
