danger

after you came out of your appointment at the police station, you didn’t talk to anyone for the rest of the day. you just had this look on your face that was between a frown and a grimace. i didn’t understand.

because every time i bring your disappearance up, it seems like you’re fading away further each time. nobody knows anything and your parents are oblivious because even though they don’t know anything, they’re just happy to have you home.

it obviously had to be something big.

you kept me safe.

what am i in danger of? what could possibly put me in danger?

nothing adds up and as i look at you from across the room, your eyes scan the book you’re reading and each flip of the page sounds harsh.

“jasper…”

you ignore me and continue to read.

“please don’t shut me out,” i plead quietly. “don’t do this.”

silence fills the room and you close the book and set it down. you stand up and brush whatever it is off your pants and you leave.

i hide my face in my hands and sigh deeply.

“i’m afraid of losing you all over again,” i whisper to myself as the front door slams closed.
