Chapter Two

I stayed home from school today. It's Kyson's prom so I decided to sleep in and get ready without having to stress of only having an hour after to school to do everything. Since Kyson goes to a different school than me we had the opportunity to go to two proms. Mine wasn't great per se. I think there were at least five arguments that occurred throughout the entirety of it that managed to continue until the next day. There were certain instances of him not talking to any of my friends and moping around at our table instead of dancing, me not looking at him in the eyes for the totality of our three-minute slow dance and another instance of me 'flirting' with some guy that told me I looked nice.

I'm just really hoping that this one is better than mine. Throughout all of senior year, I've participated in way more activities then I used to, mainly because I wanted to occupy myself to not think about him being gone playing hockey.

I get out of bed and go grab some coffee from my kitchen downstairs and see my mom as she is cleaning the mirror in the hallway. We do the usual "hi, how did you sleep?" but my mom knows me well, she knows i'm not a morning person so she avoids further, longer conversations that I try and avoid this early.

I take my coffee back upstairs and take a shower and start blowdrying out my bangs and hair before they get all messy from being in a towel for too long.

Before I already know it it's 3:45 and I promised Kyson I would be at his house by  four sharp. I get my heels that I wore to my sisters' graduation two years ago, that surprisingly still fit even though I've grown four inches since then, and walk downstairs.

"Oh you look so beautiful sweetie, let me take a few pictures of you on the stairs!" She says, with a hand covered over her mouth.

"Only a few I don't want to be late," I say, smiling for the photos.

She drives me over to Kyson's house and my mom and both of his parents start to take an obsessive amount of pictures of the two of us.

An hour later we go to his schools pre-prom. We walk through the back door and I'm instantly hit with the smell of perfume, food and all I see are ballroom sized dress around me, girls dress trains following them wherever they go.

I snap out of my daze when an unfamiliar face walks up to me and Kyson. "Wow Kyson, you clean up nice, your suit is hot." She says looking him up and down as if I weren't there.

"You look sexy yourself Dani." He says with a smirk covering half of his face. Of course the ever-so-popular Dani that Kyson has told me about. Whenever he mentions her it is along the lines of "Dani has been telling people she would tear my clothes off of me in a second if she had the chance." "Dani said to my friend today that she would fuck me, real good."

A shiver creeps down my spine thinking of all the comments she's said about him, which after this confrontation I can fully see happening. I hate this, he yelled at me a month ago at my prom for saying thank you to a close guy friend of mine who complimented my dress, but he is fully flirting with her right in front of me.

"Mhm," I say clearing my throat so the two of them would stop gapping at each other for a second so that he can remember he has his girlfriend standing right beside him, holding his hand.

"I'm Dani!" She says with a devious smile. Her Dark hair is cascading down her shoulders in tight curls, her dress long and a light pink flowing down her body. She does look stunning.

"Ya I'm Melanie, but people call me Marlie, your dress is gorgeous," I say shaking, my head a little with the same devious smile returned.

"Awe like Marlie in me where the mutt died?" She says tilting her head to the side. Is she trying to insinuate something to me? I decided it was best to stop before we go full catfight mode over a guy I've been dating for a year.

"Let's go find your friends Kyson," I say bringing him along so he doesn't continue flirting right in front of me.

"Thanks for coming to my pre-prom!" She says as we start walking away. Wait, did Kyson seriously take me to a pre-prom that the girl who wants to jump his bones is holding?

"What was that?" I say to him when we're not in the hearing range of Dani anymore.

"What was what? I can see if a girl looks hot and I can say it if I want to don't be possessive." He says cooly fixing his black tie and putting his hand in the pockets of his navy blue slacks. The colour combination didn't match well but he refused to wear anything other than his navy blue suit. He lets go of my hand and starts talking to people leaving me on the grass of this ridiculously large backyard.

After an hour or so of socializing with people I don't know, we get back to the limo where thirteen of us are squished onto one each other and I'm half sitting on Kyson's lap.

"Hey, I'm sorry for before I shouldn't have said that, and I shouldn't have taken you there." He says quietly so none of his friends can hear our conversation. So he does know at least what he did was wrong, even if he still did it. That's gotta count for something right?

"I just want to have one good prom. So agreed no more arguing and we can have fun the rest of the night?" I say to him hopefully.

"Agreed." He says while kissing my cheek and I smiled at him.

My prom was almost a month ago, Kyson and I don't attend the same high school even though the one he goes to is closer to my house. The high school I go to is about 10km away but it offers french immersion. My prom was a disaster, to say the least. Kyson had met my friends at least five times before they saw each other again the night of prom, regardless, he refused to dance with all of us because he said he felt awkward and didn't know anyone.

After he kept agreeing to come dance, not even two minutes later he would disappear to go sit down again, this happened 5 times. Although, when a slow song came on we danced, apparently I wasn't looking in his eyes the entire time and kept looking around the room for "a better boyfriend" and we had a five-day argument about it. Needless to say, I want one of these stupid dances to work out. If I'm going to take a full day to get ready, I at least want to have some fun and not let it all go to waste.
