Fred can't sleep because he keeps thinking about Kevin now. He and Finnick go outside, where they can talk safely without being overheard. Back at 13, Fred keeps wondering about whether anyone, even Bertha, is telling him the truth. The next day, he picks a fight with Bertha because he's still worried about Kevin. Fred criticizes Bertha for interacting so much with Coin and their part is on bad terms. However, they will have to spend more time together, because they're going back to 12 to do more propos. Cressida and Plutarch go with them and help strategize. Plutarch reveals that things are going well in the war. Two more districts are siding with them now. Haymitch is notably absent from the day's outing. This time, it seems like being in 12 is even harder than it was before. Fred and Bertha are both filmed in the ruins of their cul-de-sac neighborhood at Fred's house of ashes. It's very difficult for both of them. During their lunch break, they come across a Mockingjay. Fred sings with it and Pollux, who's with them. He asks Fred to sing to me and he does. Fred sings a song called The Hanging Tree. Fred remembers that song when he was a little kid and he was forbidden to sing it, but he still knows the words to it. Fred figures out that the cameras are on. His private moment has become a part of the rebels' schemes. On their way back, they pause at the place where Fred and Bertha used to hunt. Fred complains that his friendship with Bertha is slowly being destroyed, that they don't want each other anymore. They both make an effort and things seem to ease between them. They do more stuff for propos, and then Fred and Bertha meet again in the house he lived in the previous year. He's gathering more medicaments to take to his mom. They kissed. Then they go back to 13. Fred gets exhausted and goes to sleep immediately. The next day, Fred sleeps for the most of it as well, and then Boggs appears to take him to an unscheduled Command gathering. At the gathering, Finnick explains that Beetee has made new technology that will enable them to get into the Capitol's broadcast system. They watch part of a live television event where Snow and Kevin appear. Kevin is in even worse condition then before. Kevin is still pleading for a ceasefire. Then, that broadcast is interjected by Beetee's work with the propos. The broadcast is cut up. Snow and Kevin appear once again. Kevin is forced into speaking and gives Fred a direct warning, that you in District 13 will be dead by morning! As the broadcast ends, it's clear that Kevin is savagely beaten and had tears rolling down his cheeks. He's in more danger than ever. Fred saw that on TV and cries too.
