Around a quarter past three Charles asked if he could have another bite. Rangel said no. Rangel said Charles was going to have to wait. Charles had already been waiting. It was his thing, to ask and not receive. Rangel was very good at this game. Often she was not in the same room, sometimes not even in the same country. She wasn't always the same Rangel either. Charles didn't think about it too much. Ever since he first bought the Smart Switch he understood these things could happen. The advertisements promised his world would be transformed so he guessed this is what they meant. The switch operated in mysterious ways. Allegedly it read his mind but really it was kind of random and every now and then a new Rangel would tell him what he wanted to hear, which was always no, he was going to have to wait. Ok, he told himself, and sat back down. You get what you want, or you don't. Either way, whatever. Charles assumed his turn to switch was bound to come around eventually.
