Wild Versus Captive

As mentioned in the chapter "How To Choose A Crested Gecko," there are many reasons why purchasing a captive-bred gecko is different than purchasing a wild-caught crested gecko. However, health and price are not the only factors that make the captive-bred gecko different from the wild-caught gecko.

The most obvious difference is in their appearance. Why is this? Well, crested geckos that are bred in captivity are bred to enhance their traits, such as color and pattern. The geckos are bred to be more colorful, more patterned. In the wild, crested geckos are rather plain. They lack the extreme patterns and bright, fun colors of bred geckos. This does not mean that solid color geckos are wild-caught, though. Solid color geckos are useful in introducing specific colors when breeding. Not all geckos look the same, regardless of their origin.
