*Alli’s POV*
“Alli, wakey, wakey!” I hear mum chime as she opens the blinds. I make a dying whale sound as I pull the covers over my head.
“Alli, wake up” she says again, this time pulling the covers off.
“I can’t…” I begin, “I’m sick” I say, letting out a fake cough.
“I’m sure you are. Go be sick at school” mum tells me
“Can I have five more minutes?” I beg
“Sure, if you wanna be late and miss the bus”
“Oh, that means I won’t be able to go to school” I say cheerfully
“No, it means I’ll have to drive you to school -- something I don’t have time to do. Now get up.” Mum says seriously.
I pull myself out of bed and shuffle my feet across the carpet towards the bathroom. I look at myself in the mirror.
Wow, I look good… at night… 1000 miles away… in a cave… underground… to a blind person.
As I put my uniform my phone beeps. It’s a text from Ruby: “Liam and I are almost at your place, hope you’re ready!” I grab blazer and make my way down the stairs. I place my bag on the couch, making sure I have everything.
“Here you go, I figured since you haven’t had breakkie yet I made you a smoothie” mum says, placing a travel mug on the coffee table.
*ding dong ding dong*
That will be Rubes and her bro Liam. Where’s Dylan? That kid takes longer to get ready than me.
I get the door and greet Ruby and Liam with hugs.
“Dylan get your butt down here, we’re gonna be late… again.” I shout.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” I hear him say as he comes down the stairs.
“What do you spend your time doing? It’s not as if you have to do your hair or make up. You get up, shake your head, brush your teeth, put on your uniform and that’s it.” I say
“You have a lot to learn, big sis… a lot to learn.” He replies. I just roll my eyes
“Bye mum! We’re off!” I call from as we walk out the door.
When we arrive at the bus stop, Kayla and her younger sister, Bec and younger bro, Nick are already there.
“Kaylaaa!” I exclaim when I see her, “I missed you!”
She laughs, “I’m away at a dance comp for one weekend and that’s the reaction I get… I hope I don’t have to be gone much longer”
The bus was 10 minutes late. I could’ve had those extra five minutes of sleep…
*At school*
When we arrive at school, Ruby, Kayla and I head to our lockers to get out things for the first two periods.
“Jordan!!” Kayla calls when she sees him.
“Hey guys! What’s up?” Jordan says to us.
“Not much, I haven’t seen you in forever” I say to him.
Clearly that was sarcasm… I saw him yesterday.
After a quick chat, the always fashionably late, Bradley shows up.
“Oh I see the queen has arrived” Jordan teases
“Shut up, you know how much I hate that.” Brad insists.
“Lies, I know you like it” I say
After all, he was the one who decided to play the queen in that drama play in year 7.
*about 10 minutes later*
The bell rings, signalling it’s time to go to tutor group (A/N: I don’t know what you call it at your school, or if you have it at all, but tutor group is just a short 15 minute class where you get your name marked off to say you’re at school)
I say goodbye to Jordan, Ruby and Kayla because they’re not in my tutor group and walk to the classroom with Brad.
When we get there we sit in our usual sits and just chill.
“Did you hear there are 2 new kids starting today? They’re in our year too” Brad tells you.
“Ooooh, do you know who they are?” I ask.
“No idea. But someone told me they’re two guys. I know you’ll like that Alli” he teases.
“Well yeah… 85% of the boys at this school are douchebags, man whores, just plain weird or gay.” I say, bluntly. Brad just laughs.
He laughs because he thinks I’m joking. I laugh because he thinks I’m joking. I’m 100% serious.
When the bell ran signalling first period, we picked up our stuff and headed to class.
“History time” I bounce happily.
History is one of my favourite subjects.
“Health time” Brad says not as enthusiastically. I know he despises health.
Brad and I go our separate ways and I’m about a quarter of the way to class when I see Ruby running up to me… isn’t she supposed to be going the same way as Brad – they have class together.
“Alli, Alli, Alli, please tell me you did the science homework!” she pleads
“Ruby, Ruby, Ruby I did do the science homework, did you?” I say mimicking her
“No…” she says quietly, “can I copy yours?”
I roll my eyes “why didn’t you ask me on the bus? Not on the way to first period. You realise science is second, don’t you?”
“And you realise you’re wasting valuable copying time… please just give it to me. I’ll do it right now, it’ll take two seconds, and we won’t even be late to first period!” Ruby says quickly, reaching for my books.
I give in and let her copy it “Be quick though”
*a few minutes later*
“Okay Ruby that’s it, the second bell has already gone, just take it” I say grabbing my stuff and hastily making my way to history… which was on the other side of the school.
*When you arrive in class*
I’m almost at the classroom. I’m puffed from walking quickly. I would have ran, but that looks tacky… and it’s dangerous. I remember year 7. I was panicking because I was a few minutes late. So I ran and tripped. It wasn’t pretty.
I enter the room and all eyes look towards me.
“Oh Alli, how nice of you to join us. You’re late.” Ms. Paint tells me.
Yeah I knew that before I got through the door.
“I know, sorry.” I say, apologetically.
“Any reason?” she asks.
Oh, this idiot I call my best friend wanted to copy my homework and didn’t tell me til 5 minutes ago... I don’t think she’ll appreciate that reason.
“I- I- I don’t know” I say.
“Don’t let it happen again. Go take a seat.”
I sit down in my usual seat – second last row, next to my friend, Claudia.
As I got all my stuff out there was a knock on the door. It was the head of school with a young boy. A boy you haven’t seen at this school before.
“I think that’s the new guy” Claudia leans over and whispers to me.
