Carries a pistol and a bat with all of the significant people from his life engraved on it with their initials. These people include Tenn, Sophie, Marlon, Louis, Clem and AJ (later)

Joe's dad left him when he was 9 just before the apocalypse and disappeared ever since, to this day Joe has no idea why he did so but he started to cause trouble afterwards, eventually finding himself at Ericson's boarding school, where he met Marlon and Louis, his future best friends and Sophie, his girlfriend up to a year prior to season 4 where she was traded in to Delta.

Joe was under the impression Sophie was killed by walkers, believing Marlon because of their close friendship, Joe then undergone a long period of mourning for Sophie which takes us up to the beginning of Season 4

Joe is an artistic person,  his love for drawing stemmed from and was enhanced by Sophie, the two of them influencing each other in a positive way for the duration of their relationship. He's also remarkably intelligent in a multitude of ways, he is a skilled engineer and tactician, though despite this, he doesn't consider himself much of a leader.  Joe knows how to aim and fire most small arms, having been taught how to do so by his father. His deductive reasoning also stems from this same reason, mainly as his father wanted him to become a police officer prior to his disappearance.

Joe, despite his suspicion of others to begin with, has a compassionate soul, often looking after some of the younger students as well as laying down his life for the group.
