STORY:
It was the start of year 3, Esme was going to school and everything was normal. She walked to school like she did every day with her brothers DeAndre and Esteban. As her parents were never around, she couldn't be driven in. Esteban parted ways with Esme and DeAndre as he was much older and had to go to the secondary school near by as he was going into year 7. The siblings walked into the primary school. Esme waved goodbye to DeAndre as he walked up the small coloured stairs to a separate classroom for older kids. She turned back around to the younger kids cloakroom, hanging up her small black bag. Her bag was torn all over, things would fall out her bag regularly but her family didn't have any money to buy her a new bag. The bag had stains dotted around it from who knows where and a various amount of stickers.
Esme strolled into the classroom and went to her place on the small light green table that sat on top of the colourful butterfly carpet. But before she could sit down she looked at her place and saw a boy sitting there. The teacher, Mrs. Callahan, was stood behind him. The little boy had dark brown hair, glossy chestnut eyes and a defined jawline. Esme stood in confusion and looked to the teacher.
"Miss, who's this?" She asked rather bluntly.
"This is Blake. You're going to be his buddy because he is new. Blake was transferred here. Can you look after him for me?" The teacher smiled at Esme kindly, with a warm vibe.
"Uhm. Okay" Esme responded.
The teacher nodded and walked up to the front of the classroom. As the teacher left, Esme smiled at Blake sweetly.
"Hi" She said a little nervously.
"Hello" the dark haired boy responded. "I'm Blake. Blake Richardson." He grinned confidently.
"I'm Esme Lee.." She said. "Uhm. . . Welcome to Elmore school. I'm in year 3, what year are you in?"
"I'm year 3 too!" He said happily.
"That's good. That means I can stay with you!" Esme cheered.
Just as the two finished their conversation, the teacher stood at the front and spoke loudly.
"Good morning class!" She said, in a sing-song tone.
"Good morning Mrs. Callahan. Good morning everybody." The class chorused.
Just as they finished their 'good morning' chant, Esme glanced at Blake and smiled. She leaned over to whisper to him.
"We're gonna be such good friends" She said with hope in her eyes.
Blake leaned to her and smiled, "Definitely" he replied.
As the day went on with colouring, sticking, cutting and singing, Esme and Blake became closer and closer. It was like they had known each other all their lives. The day began to come to a close as it was nearly home time. The whole class was dismissed and all the children started running out of the classroom at full speed. Esme stopped Blake before he could run with the others.
"Wait." She warned as she watched the other children.
"What? Why? We should just go!" He said eagerly.
"No, if we go now, we won't be able to get our bags without getting hurt. We need to stay here until the others disappear" she told him. Esme has been at this school ever since she could even start school, so she knew the ins and outs of the place.
"Oh, Okay" he said in agreement.
The kids all filtered out then Esme and Blake walked to the cloakroom to their pegs at last. Esme picked up her black torn bag while Blake picked up his dark blue small rucksack that was in very good condition. As Esme finished putting on her bag she felt a sharp tap on her shoulder. She spun around to see her brother DeAndre standing intimidatingly behind her. Esme was not phased at all. Blake on the other hand was frozen to the spot.
"Who the hell is this?" DeAndre asked menacingly. DeAndre was tall for his age. He had thick curly brown hair that looked perfect from every angle. His nickname was Dre. It's what everyone called him. Dre had deep almost black eyes that was terrifying to look into.
Esme rolled her eyes, already frustrated that DeAndre was asking questions. "This is Blake." She replies as she folded her arms. Esme was quite grown up for her age as she basically had to bring herself up along with her brothers. "Blake is new and I was told to be his buddy" she continued explaining.
DeAndre kept his arms crossed, glaring at Blake and then looking at Esme again. "Esme remember what E said. No fucking strangers" he snapped at her. "Blake is a stranger. Make him leave before I do." DeAndre threatened.
As this conversation was happening, Blake was stood watching the whole thing in fear of Esme's older brother.
Just as Esme and DeAndre finished their conversation, Esteban strolled through the door in search of his siblings. "Esme. Dre. We're leaving. C'mon" he commanded them. As he did so, Blake turned to look at Esteban.
Esme turned to see Esteban and then looked at Blake. She clearly listened to Esteban no matter what. "Oh.." She said "I'm really sorry Blake but I have to go." She said quietly.
"Esme stop talking to the stupid little boy. We're leaving now." Esteban demanded as he grabbed Esme's hand, dragging her out of the little one's cloak room and outside. Dre followed them closely as he glared at Blake.
Esme was constantly protected by her brothers. Dre and E were told by their mother specifically to look after Esme. Especially after she passed away.
"Esme Wait!" Blake called as he ran outside to where the Lee family was. Just as Blake has called out, Dre and Esteban spun around instantly glaring at Blake and walking toward him quickly, their protective instincts setting in.
