As first lieutenant Brian Henderson and his Platoon entered Manhattan via the Brooklyn bridge on the back of armored vehicles, he couldn't help but feel that they were in for something they might not be able to handle. It didn't help that as they reached the bridges entrance, Brian and his Subordinates felt a tug up the back of their minds, urging them, SCREAMING at them to turn around. They shuffled nervously in their seats from one calf to another. Luckily, as they reached the middle of the bridge, the calling started to calm down, but it sure as hell freaked Brian and his boys out.
Turn around.....
Go back.......
You do not belong here mortal......
And on that last confusing note, the voice stopped entirely.
He added the voice to the mental list he didn't know he HAD about how different this situation was from the rest he's been in. Brian had signed up to join the American military fresh out of college with a bachelors in Biotech. He'd hoped he'd get into the engineering core and work with the others there to create more BioWare that the military could use. However, shortly after graduating boot camp he'd quickly discovered that though he was indeed talented in the fields of biological technology, he was even better at commanding men. He'd served years ago in desert storm as a Private First Class, and stuck with the military until his superiors finally recognized his stubbornness for what it was and started laying promotions at his feet. 3 years after his promotion to corporal he was promoted to sergeant.
Brian has seen and done things that you either wouldn't believe, or he couldn't bring himself to speak of. He'd killed, saved, and fought to the point that he though nothing could surprise him anymore.
That's what freaked him out about this situation.
Nothing made any damn sense about it.
It started on August 16th, when people began going to the police station in droves saying that their relatives living in New York City were not responding to their calls. Nobody was freaking out until they realized that thousands of people were experiencing it as well. Then the panic really kicked in.
They tried to call the electrician centers in Manhattan to see if there was some sort of electrical problem in the New York area. But that proved to be futile as they didn't pick up either.
Fearing the worst, the president launched observatory helicopters and sent in the military.
For some reason, it felt like an agonizingly long time before the first observation teams actually entered the city, and even longer before they got the go ahead to start the walk down their assigned bridges, with Brian and his platoon being assigned the Brooklyn.
As he and his platoon passed through the Brooklyn streets a few minutes ago, he'd seen people peeling themselves off the ground with looks of confusion on their faces. Others were still wildly sprawled on the ground and some pedestrians were shaking them or offering assistance.
Brian had assigned 6 platoon medics to search the street they'd taken to the bridge to look for any injured civilians before continuing their path towards Manhattan.
In the distance, hidden behind some of the smaller buildings, trails of smoke curled into the air like black crooked claws.
Brian worried.
He had no idea what he and his men were walking into.
Brian was in the back of the front car. The first in a 20 car procession, the three tanks he had with him not included. If anything were to interrupt his groups progress Brian and his squad would be the first to respond.
