By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);

And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?-

(It is) the Star of piercing brightness;-

There is no soul but has a protector over it.

Now let man but think from what he is created!

He is created from a drop emitted-

Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:

Surely ((Allah)) is able to bring him back (to life)!

The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,

(Man) will have no power, and no helper.

By the Firmament which returns (in its round),

And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),-

Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):

It is not a thing for amusement.

As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,

And I am planning a scheme.

Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).

This Surah was revealed in Makkah and takes its name from the noun at-Tariq which occurs in the first verse. The Surah consist of seventeen verses and maybe divided into three sections for purpose of study.

The Surah opens up with the oath by the sky and the piercing stars. It then asserts that every soul has a watching angel set over it.

Some scholars hold that the star has been described as at-Tariq because it is only seen at night and is hidden during the day. Every human being has a guardian over him or her. The watchful guardian records all one's motives and actions. Thus people are not left to do as they wish without having guardians over them who watch and record everything they say and do. An accurate record is kept for every human being. On the Day of Judgement, all human secrets will be revealed. [Verse 1- 4]

The second section, Verse 5-10, is a reminder to man of his origin and a warning that on Day of Judgement he will stand before his Lord for Judgement when no one will be able to help him.

The third section, Verse 11-17, follows with an oath that Allah has not sent the Qur'an as a joke or amusement but that it is a decisive word. It is a word of distinction between the truth and falsehood.

The Surah ends on a warning to those who reject Allah's guidance and refuse to accept the truth of the Qur'an and devise artful schemes to disprove the truth. Allah is All-Powerful. HE devises a yet scheme to bring their artful schemes to nothing.
