"Where is she!" Chris ran into the emergency room, panting.
"Sir, who are you talking about?" The woman at the counter asked him, looking down at her computer to see if any new people came in.
"Olivia Wilder, is she here! She was shot! Where is she!" He gripped the counter.
"One moment sir," She typed the name into the computer, "She is in surgery right now, I don't know how long it will take but I'll let one of the doctors know that there is someone waiting for her. Please, take a seat in the waiting area," Motioning to the few hospital benches and chairs in a corner.
Chris looked at his phone, it was almost time for Harrison to get out of school and Olivia wouldn't be there. He had to pick him up.
"Um, call me when she gets out, I need to get her son, please, please call me," He handed her his number and ran out the door.
"Shit," He turned the car on and pressed on the gas to get Harry, getting there 10 minutes late and breathless.
"Hey, where's mom?" Harry cautiously climbed into the car.
"Hospital, something went wrong, I'll tell you when we get there, are you hungry? Do you need food? Are you thirsty?" Chris stuttered out, putting the car in drive again and sped back towards the hospital.
"Wait, what? Why is she in the hospital!"
"I'll tell you when we get there! I can't think about it until we get there, not with you in the car," They were there under record time, nothing happened that Chris didn't need to know about, she was still in surgery.
"So that's Chris Evans?" Another nurse came up to the one behind his desk, doing some paperwork.
"Yeah, his girl is in surgery, apparently she was dead for 6 minutes last I heard. They told me not to say anything to him, you know, he's a lot more in tune with his emotions than I thought he would be," She mumbled back, looking down to avoid eye contact with him.
"Shit, what happened?"
"Got shot, don't know the story though. He had to pick up that kid though, I don't know who he is though, I mean, why'd he bring a kid to the hospital?"
"You know, if you're talking about the girl that was in the magazine's a couple of times, talking about how she was Chris Evans girlfriend, we don't know a lot about her, what if she has a son or something?" The second nurse chewed on her pen in hand.
"Girl, if you think I know anything about pop culture, you are sorely mistaken," She shook her head with a small smile on her face, "Take over the counter will you and let Evans know when his girl is out of surgery? I have to do rounds," She grumbled slightly, getting out of the comfortable chair and walked back past the marked doors.
Chris' head shot up, sensing movement but to his avail, she was leaving, not coming to him.
"What happened?" Harry demanded, snapping his fingers in front of him to grab his attention.
"Gabe was in town so the Boston police contacted the police here to do a sting to get him, he got her and we got him but it ended with your mom getting shot, I-I don't know how it happened, the police had it, they were going to take care of it!" He groaned, leaning back in his chair and covered his face with his hands.
"Why didn't you tell me!" Harry stood up, eyes flashing with anger.
"Your mom didn't want to tell you because she knew how you feel towards your dad and didn't want to upset you during school hours or have you miss some school. I'm really sorry Harry, we shouldn't have even done it in the first place," Chris put his hand over Harry's arm, trying to get him to sit and calm down.
"Get off of me! You're not my dad! You can't take care of me, you can't even take care of my mother!" He shouted, drawing the attention of everyone in the waiting room.
"I tried, I tried to tell her it wasn't a good idea, I didn't want to risk her but she wanted to go through with it. She wanted to be free from him and she was so hellbent on doing so that no one could have stopped her, she did it for you, she did it for us," Chris stood up, trying again to put his hand on Harry's shoulder.
"How could you let her do this, now I might not have a mom and a dad! Don't talk to me," He growled, walking to sit on the opposite side of the waiting room.
"Jesus," Chris whispered, he slowly sank down into the chair and caressed his temples with his fingers.
3 hours passed until someone finally called Olivia's name, both Harry and Chris jumped up and ran over to nurse #2 holding the clipboard.
"Are you two family?" She asked, cocking an eyebrow at the two distraught boys.
"Yes, we are," Chris stated, looking down at Harry.
"We were able to get all three bullets out of her but one stuck in more than we originally thought it would. That wound had us put her in a medically induced coma so we could safely retrieve it and keep her alive. She lost a lot of blood and we lost her for a while as well but she was strong and pulled through. She will be in the coma for a couple of days just to help with some of the major healing and then we'll slowly take her out of it. You can come to see her if you'd like," Opening the door for them and watched them walk through the entrance.
The three of them walked through the hospital, the afternoon light shining through the vast amount of windows held in the hospital, the smell of disinfectant overwhelming their senses. They took a couple of turns, probably would get themselves lost trying to do it themselves, and came upon a private room near the main desk as she became a high priority when she died and came back. The nurse opened the door for them and led them into her room, the light sound of beeping filling their ears.
"Mom," Harry whispered, standing in the doorway, unable to move.
"This is all my fault," Chris mumbled, walking slowly to the corpselike version of the woman he knew he was meant to be with.
Olivia laid on the bed, pale as the sheets on top and beneath her. Her hair flowed out along the pillow, appearing as if she was floating on clouds. Everything about the room was too pristine that if anyone were to come in that didn't know what happened, they would think that she had died and not returned.
"Visiting hours end at 8, so I suggest you go get some food later and try to rest," The second nurse suggested to them, not feeling so great about herself, gossiping with the first nurse.
Chris sat down next to Olivia and took her lifeless hand in his, he brushed his thumb against her knuckles and started crying. He raised her hand to his forehead and wept, not caring he was crying in front of a 14-year-old. They both stayed until visiting hours were over, Chris had to pry Harry out of the room and into the car. They silently made their way to Taco Bell and back home again, neither of them talking to each other. Harry slammed his door shut to his room with food in hand, not wanting to see Chris.
"Chris, what happened? I hadn't heard anything from you all day, I was starting to get worried?" Lacey came out of the bathroom with a towel in hand.
"She died, and then came back, she was shot three times Lacey and it was all my fault," He slouched on the couch, a sullen expression taking over his face.
"Oh my god," Lacey sat down next to him, throwing the towel onto the table.
"Now Harry hates me, I hate myself, and you probably hate me now too."
"I don't hate you," She told him, sitting there with him until he fell asleep, completely ignoring his own dinner.
"I don't hate you," She pushed him lightly so he would be up against the pillows and took the food from him, bringing it into the kitchen to save for later.
She checked on Harry to see him fast asleep on his own bed, pillow stained with tears, eyes and nose red. Lacey went into Olivia's room and gathered up a bag for Chris or herself to bring tomorrow to the hospital as a bag for her and fell asleep, deciding that she had enough action for the day and would call her husband in the morning. It had been a long day.
