Although off the books due to it being almost illegal and having some concerning side effects like brain damage, heart issues, and most commonly memory loss. The risks of that in the 80's were mildly high, Cognitive impairment is sometimes noticed after ECT. While in some patients the recovery from retrograde amnesia will be incomplete, and evidence has shown that ECT can result in persistent or permanent memory loss It is the purported effects of ECT on long-term memory that give rise to much of the concern surrounding its use.
