Chapter 4-Part 3

I walked down the empty street. A bright light began to shine in the dark sky. This was the light that I've been waiting my whole life to see. Now, I can slowly regain the missing day. As I walked down the empty streets, I could hear a singing that was unfamiliar to me. I remember that we had learned that early in the morning, animals called birds sang. Was this the beautiful sound I have been waiting for?

I felt chills crawl up my spine as a cool breeze passed by. I had heard that this was the season called winter. The jacket that I packed I had pulled out and it kept me warm until I passed by a small store. I walked in and looked around. The clerk stared at me.

"How may I help you?" she asked.

"Um, well I was wondering how much this was. I pulled up a small sandwich that was laid properly in the fridge.

"Oh, that's $1.75." she answered. She had a cute smile on her face as she looked at me. I looked down at the sandwich. The only amount of change I had was .50. I put it back and began to leave until she called after me. "Little boy, don't you have enough money for that sandwich?"

"No, I don't. I'll go ahead and leave." That's when she walked to me. I stopped as she knelt down in front of me.

"Where is your parents?" I guess she realized that I've been by myself this whole time.

"I don't have any." I said. She looked surprised.

"Do have a place to go?"

"Yeah, he does. He needs to come back with us." I heard a familiar voice say. I looked over and saw one of the adults standing in the doorway. I immediately grabbed onto the woman with fear.

"Who are you?" she asked.

"I am his parent, and he needs to come back home. Justin, we are very upset with you." he growled at me with fire in his eyes. That made me hold onto her tighter.

"Does this man scare you?" she whispered to me. I nodded my head quickly to answer. "I'm sorry, but I don't think you're his real parent. I'm going to call the police and confirm this." she held me as she walked over to a phone. She had dialed a few numbers and began to talk to someone on the other line.

I stared at the man that had walked up to the counter and he smiled at me. I was scared to say anything. My plan of running away did work fully. I needed to leave here quickly!

"The police are on their way. I will be sure that this young boy will stay with me until we can handle this appropriately." she said.

"Well of course, who wouldn't want to handle this, appropriately?" he kept his eyes on me as he answered. I do hope that I would stay with this woman after this is over.
