MORE THAN A DREAM

It's the same dream again; Lance can tell. He feels the same dread, the same sadness, the same helplessness.

Or, at least he thought this was all the same. It looks like the same place he last saw Allura, but where are his friends? Where are the Paladins of old? Where is Allura?

"Lance..."

That was her voice! But he still doesn't see her. "Where are you?" He tries to ask, but he honestly can't tell if any sound escapes from his mouth or not.

He spins around, looking behind him. He looks to the left, he looks to the right. Finally, he thinks he sees the silhouette of her figure off in the distance. He tries to run to her, but he discovers that he isn't moving forward.

"Lance..." She says his name again, the shadow of her hand outstretched towards him. He reaches his hand out too. He knows he is too far away from her, but he has to try!

He thinks he might finally be moving towards her, when he suddenly feels himself waking up. "No!" He shouts as his surroundings begin to fade away. "Allura, I don't want to leave you!"

"Remember what I said," he hears her distant voice say. "I'll always be with you..."

Once again, Lance wakes up in a cold sweat. It is the middle of the night, and his Altean markings are glowing again, but he doesn't care. What was with the dream he just had? It was definitely different than the dream he's used to having. But the crazy thing is, it felt like more than a dream. No, it didn't feel like a dream at all. It felt like it had really happened.

"Lance, are you okay?" He hears his mother ask outside his room. What, was she constantly listening for him or something?

"I'm okay," he replies, though he isn't quite sure that he is. Not only did the dream (or whatever it was) feel real, but he also feels like somebody else is in his room with him. And now more than ever, he would almost be willing to bet that it's Allura. Or her spirit. Her consciousness? Whatever she was now.

Or it could be he misses her so much, that he's finally totally and completely lost his mind.

"Are you positive?" His mother asks through the door. "I heard you calling out in your sleep..."

Oh no... "Really Mom, I'm fine. Go back to sleep."

His mother hesitates, but finally he hears her walk away and go back to bed. Once he's sure she's gone, he reaches over and turns on the lamp beside his bed. As he expected, the light shines upon an empty room. But his markings are still glowing, and he still feels like he isn't alone.

"Allura, is that you?" He says. He isn't sure if he'll get a response, or even how she could respond. But he can still hope, can't he?

After a long silence, he sighs disappointedly. I guess I really am going crazy, he thinks as he turns the lamp back off. Despite his markings still glowing, he closes his eyes and tries to go back to sleep.

Yes Lance, it's me.

Lance sits up in bed. Had that really just happened? He didn't hear anything. No, it wasn't an actual voice. It was a thought inside his head, but he didn't think it. It wasn't his thought.

"Allura, did you... did you just do that?" He says.

Yes, I just said 'it's me.'

Another thought that isn't his, and a sassy one at that. And his markings are glowing like crazy! They're so bright now, they are nearly blinding him.

Allura is still with him. She really, truly is still with him. He doesn't know how it's possible, but at the moment that doesn't matter. Right now, he is so happy that his eyes begin to tear up.

"Allura, I miss you so much!" He says.

I know, I miss you too.

"So that dream I just had... It wasn't really a dream, was it?"

It was and it wasn't. It was my way of trying to contact you so that I could talk with you like this.

"But how are you doing this?" He asks. "How is this possible?"

It is... difficult to explain. You could say I'm on a higher plane of existence than you. I've been able to keep track of you occasionally, through your markings. But I'm still learning new things, still learning what it means to exist here.

"So all the times that my markings glowed, that was you trying to connect with me?"

We've been connected this entire time, Lance. Ever since I gave you those markings. But yes, when they glowed that was me attempting to communicate with you. I'm just glad it finally worked.

Lance smiles, a smitten expression on his face. "Me too. I mean, I wish I could actually hear your voice... but I'll definitely take what I can get!" He pauses before adding, "I love you, Allura. I never stopped."

I love you too, Lance. More than you know.
