My hand froze on the handle for a brief moment before I sighed and open the door back into the pool house. I hated that I made things so weird with Crash. Because of my recent inability to explain how I felt, I ended up putting everyone in the group in an very, very weird place. Ugh, I hated to say this but Elias was right!
When I walked back towards the lab table, instead of running away from my problems like I so desperately wanted to, Taco and Elias both gave me funny looks.
"Didn't you have somewhere to go?" Taco asked, narrowing his eyes in confusion when I approached the shallow end of the empty pool.
"When did I say that?" I shot back before sitting on the edge. "Did you guys take the tabs yet?"
"No, we're about to," he replied, nodding his head over to Crash and Elias, who were currently talking as Elias slowly cut off a square off from the whole sheet. My eyes widened when I saw they were conversing and laughing about something, which was odd because in the few times we hung out, they barely spoke a word to each other. What the fuck did they have to talk about now?
I stood and my sudden movement grabbed both of their attentions. The weight of both their eyes was crushing me, and I awkwardly cleared my throat before blurting, "I wanna try a tab."
Elias chuckled gruffly before shaking his head. "Fuck that."
I furrowed my brows, confusion replacing my awkwardness quickly. "Why not? This is our second batch and I still haven't tried it yet."
"Don't mix business," Elias reminded me with an eye roll, and my fists balled up when I heard his statement. Jesus, what was with everything today being thrown in my face with no hint of subtlety?
"I just think it's wild that we already made two batches and we have yet to try any of them," I complained, crossing my arms. "Have you even tried acid before?"
When he shook his head, my jaw dropped. I was asking as a joke, but I didn't think it was actually true. "Are you serious?" He nodded meekly and looked back down at the colored sheet of tabs in front of him, a rosy shade rising to his cheeks as he bit his lip and tried to continue cutting them up.
I looked to Taco, whose expression bore a similar face of shock like mine. "Dude, how are you so good at making shit you've never tried before?"
"Yeah, that makes no fucking sense," Crash agreed, shaking his head. "You have to trip at least one in your life, bro."
He sighed before placing the scissors down on the table. "I am gonna try it. Just not right now, I have a drug test coming up soon."
Drug test? For what? Maybe it involves something for Bella, considering how he's filing for guardianship. I didn't want to make assumptions, so I kept quiet and made a note to ask him later about the whole scenario.
"I'm holding you to that shit, man," Taco said, before pointing to me. "Ember can hold you down and shove that tab down your throat."
Something about the way Taco said that made my body tense, and I bit my lip before chuckling awkwardly. "Yeah..."
Suddenly, Crash gave Elias a dap and walked over to the pool edge to do the same to Taco. "Aight y'all. Imma catch y'all another day because honestly I'm not feeling up to this right now."
Taco squinted at his friend, bewildered by his sudden change in mood. "You good, bro?"
Crash simply nodded and grabbed his phone off the table. Usually he would come and say something to just me before he leaves, but with the way we were I knew better than to push my luck. "Yeah, I'll see you guys in school tomorrow. Later!"
