My mother told me that, when I was born, she had to leave and he couldn't come with us for some unkown reason so he was left behind. I pretty much grew up without knowing who he was, what his name was or if he's still alive. My mother wouldn't tell me a thing about him, the only information I know is what I forced out of her. And believe me, it wasn't something fun to do.
That's it. That's all I got from her.
The doorbell rang, signaling that they were here. My mom rushed to the door and opened it, letting everyone in.
"Ivy!!" Lia cheered as she hugged my mother tightly.
"Hey Li" She laughed and hugged her best friend back.
I turned to the others, who stared at the sight and me with amusement.
"Happy Birthday Jade!!!" Mary Margaret, or Snow White as she was actually called, spoke up.
Yes, I knew about my roots and I knew that Snow and Charming where my grandparents and that Emma was my aunt. She was the savior along with my mother.
"Thank you!" I smiled widely as I hugged Charming and her.
They both gave me sympathetic smiles and walked away to greet their daughter. I then turned to look at my nephew, Henry and smiled at him.
"Hey kid. Happy Birthday." He greeted me and we did our normal handshake thing.
"Don't call me kid just because I'm younger. I hate it! And thank you" I exclaimed.
"Alright, no need to be so grumpy." Henry put his hands up in surrender.
I rolled my eyes and playfully shoved him before turning to Emma, my aunt. She smiled at me and hugged me.
Lastly, I turned to Lia. My moms best friend. She was a cool person and I loved hanging out with her.
"HEY GURL!!" Lia yelled and I chuckled.
"Hey Lia, I see you're as happy as always?" I smiled and she nodded her head.
"Of course I am, especially on this day. It's your birthday!!" She squeeled.
"Yeah, I know." I laughed.
"Okay everybody, who wants something to drink?" My mother announced and a chorus of voices cheered.
"Okay okay, if you all tell me what you want one by one, I'll manage to bring you what you desire." She added.
Everyone told her what they wanted to drink and my mum wrote it down so that she wouldn't forget.
"Jade, help me out please." My mom ordered as she nodded her head to the kitchen.
I followed her and helped her out a bit.
"Listen J. I'm sorry for earlier, I just don't like to talk about your father. Especially on this day, I mean, it's your birthday." My mom explained as she put the last cups on a tray.
She gave me an apologizing smile and I sighed.
"It's alright. I'm just wondering you know, I want to know who he was, if he's still alive..." I wondered.
"Oh, he surely is alive." I heard mom mutter and furrowed my eyebrows.
She looked up at me and smiled.
"Now, can you bring these to our guests. I have something to take care of." She handed me the tray with drinks and I turned around, walking to the living room.
"Here you go!" I said as I placed the tray on the small glass coffee table in the middle of the living room.
Everyone grabbed their drinks and sat back down in their seats as I sat down on a chair.
"So, do you feel eighteen yet?" David questioned.
"Nah, not really." I truthfully said.
"Oh don't worry, you will come to that point. You're officially eighteen when it's midday towards afternoon." Mary Margaret announced.
"How come you don't know the exact time of my birth? Even mom doesn't know what time I was born. Isn't that weird?" I asked and they all silenced.
Something really fishy is going on. This always happens when it's my birthday. Everyone acts strange when I ask them about the time of my birth or where my father was. They actually all wince when I bring up my father and that's why I'm so curious as to who he was and what he does etc etc.
"Well, we know the answer to that question but maybe your mother wants to tell you that herself. So, ask her." Henry suggested.
I nodded and took a sip of my tea. I surely was going to do that.
*~*~*~*
The day passed by quickly and eventful and it was now afternoon. I had just hung up from a call that I got from a friend of mine who wished me a happy birthday and I entered the living room to see everyone standing round the dinning table with smiles and grins on their faces.
"Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday dear Jaaade,
Happy birthday, to youuu!!!"
My family applaused as my mom placed a birthday cake in front of me. It was a chocolate cake with a lot of wiped cream on it. My favourite.
I smiled widely as I took a deep breath, ready to blow my candles out when Mary Margaret interrupted my action.
"Wait! Make a wish first!" She yelled and I held my breath.
I then closed my eyes and thought of something.
"I wish that my life would be a bit more eventful..."
And with that, I blew all the candles out with one breath. Lia, Henry and Emma cheered loudly as David and Mary gave me a kiss on the cheek. I then turned to my mother who smiled proudly at me and I hugged her tightly.
"Happy Birthday sweetheart." She whispered into my ear.
David, Mary Margaret, Henry and Emma left after the cake because they had some business to take care of but Lia stayed a bit longer. I opened my presents and then decided to get ready for bed because I had school tomorrow.
I said goodbye to Lia and my mum and thanked them both for everything they did today. I then headed upstairs where I changed into my pj's and brushed my teeth.
As I crossed the hall to my room, a voice caught my attention. It was a worried one and I stopped walking, listening to it.
"-I don't know what to do Lia."
"Grace, you have brought her up so well and every time she asked you about her father you held it all in. I admire you, you know. But, you shouldn't spill everything just because she asks you about him, I mean, you've hidden this secret from her for so many years. It's a pity if you let it all go to waste." Lia's voice spoke up.
I furrowed my eyebrow. Secret? What secret? They were talking about my father!! I shouldn't eavesdrop but it was something that I needed to hear. I had always been eager to hear about my father and get to know him and this was probably going toο far but I had heard enough to know that my body wouldn't move to go to my room.
"You're right. I probably should wait until the time is right." My mother's voice sounded.
"So, have you already found a solution to Grumpy's problem?" Lia asked, changing the subject.
I sighed in sadness and walked to my room. There was no point in eavesdropping anymore. So might as well go to bed.
As I layed in bed though, sleep didn't overtake me and I was left staring at the ceiling, fantasizing about my life until eventually, sleep came.
