I couldn't (revised)

My mission was to eliminate her
But I couldn't.

Her beautiful smile,
Her rich brown eyes,
Her silky caramel hair,
Her amazing sense of humor,
Her optimistic presence,
I couldn't.

The boss told me again to eliminate her
And her optimism
But I couldn't.

The world stopped
When I looked at her
And my heart beat
Harder and harder
With every breath.
I couldn't.

When I looked at her I knew
Even if my world was crumbling,
Even if the skies were gray,
Everything would be okay.
I couldn't.

She was the driving force in my life,
The force that let me see the next day.
She was my opportunity to start anew,
To leave this corrupt organization.
But I couldn't.

I explained to the boss that
I couldn't
But he said
"You're too soft
You spineless stooge."

And as I was getting prepared
To be eliminated by the boss
For not carrying out my mission,
I thought of that girl,
Her beautiful smile,
Her rich brown eyes,
Her silky caramel hair,
Her amazing sense of humor,
Her optimistic presence,
I couldn't.

Just then the whole world stopped
And I felt her heart
Pounding against mine.
Hers in promise, mine in fear.
Staggered breaths,
Forlorn sobs,
Fear streaming from my eyes like rivers.
All of a sudden overwhelmed
By the fear of being without her.
I couldn't.

I could hear her soft voice in my head telling me
"Even though your world is crumbling,
Even though the skies are gray,
Everything will be okay."
I believed her.
I loved her.
I couldn't.

I couldn't resist the boss anymore.
I gave up the fight
All for that girl.
I couldn't.

And as I was shrouded
In the darkness of death
I thought one last time of that girl,
The light of my life.
I wanted to tell her
That I saved her
And that I believed her
And that I loved her
But I couldn't.

I wanted to tell herThat I saved herAnd that I believed herAnd that I loved herBut I couldn't

(Yeah, this is the edited version I used for a poem project in English class. I kept the basics of the original one, changed a few words, added a few lines, and voila. Also we had to have a "creative element" which is what the drawing is for. The hand at the top is the girl's and the hand at the bottom is the boy's.)
