It's sad cause this is what my parents use to say to me a lot. Instead of suppporting me they think it is possible to punish the autism out of me. When I ask them to put their music less loud because it hurts my ears they say: 'Stop whining, it's not loud.' Or when I don't understand something my father would scold me for it and say: 'What are you, disabled or something? Every three year old would know what I meant.'
My parents still want to believe that autism is something that can be cured if you push and punish your child hard enough. You cannot expect from someone who is autistic that they start to act normal at a certain age.
Telling someone with autism to act normal is like telling a dead body to act alive. It can't, he is death. Asking people to try to be normal or to fit in more isn't gonna work and you should accept that.
Note: with not asking people to be normal I do not mean that autistic people cannot be normal. I just want to say that you shouldn't forbid autistic people to be themselves and to stand out instead of blend in because society expects it from them.
