After winning the spring volleyball tournament in your prefecture, you had been knocked down and injured by a vengeful group of girls you had defeated on your climb to victory.
After the match, you found yourself balling your eyes out in the bathroom, sporting a bleeding lip, bruises and a knee screaming with pain as it shook and convulsed.
Your coach assured you a full recovery, but he insisted you moved to a larger prefecture, with stronger competition. He also thought you'd be safer somewhere else.
As beautiful as Little Kyoto was, it was filled with desperate people, people that feared and despised natural-born talent.
And you were perhaps the highest filled cup of talent, like a glass of liquid gold.

"Sorry (Y/n)" your coach patted your shoulder as you had your knee re-wrapped in a tight bandage, "but I think it's for the best".

"But coach!" You insisted, grabbing his hand tightly between your smaller ones, "please! All I want is to play volleyball!"

He gave you a kind smile and patted you on the head with a cheerful laugh. "Then you can play volleyball somewhere else, a place with more opportunities for you. More competitions for you to prove your strength and national potential" He looked down at you, a sad look on his young face, "I won't have my brightest star be burnt out, before she can reach her goal. Not by these jealous girls".

You looked at the ground, a volleyball held between your calves. You kicked it gently across the gym floor, "ok, you got it coach".

A FEW MONTHS LATER...

Standing in front of your new school, Karasuno High, you squeezed one of your backpack straps over your shoulder in your anxiousness.
You looked down at your phone, a text flashed up on the screen from your old team's setter, probably the closest person to a 'friend' you'd ever had.

Asuki - "Get well and train hard! One day I better see you at nationals. Don't forget to bring your A game cause I'm going to kick your sorry ass Ace!"

A weird text to smile at, but you couldn't help it, apart from your coach, no one else had wished you well on your departure out of Little Kyoto. Your thumb drummed on the screen as you typed your reply, a small smirk on your pretty features as you clicked send.

You: "Don't think I won't still be the best quick spiker you've ever seen! Enjoy trying to find a replacement as good as me!
All the best for the future Captain :)"

It showed that she had read the message, but it didn't really need a reply, so you weren't surprised when you didn't get one.

You were interrupted from your thoughts when you heard the soft voice of a girl who had stopped in front of you, "Good morning".

Your eyes quickly flipped up off your phone to the girl. She was at least a head taller than you, with long black hair and glasses perched on the end of her delicate nose. To her chest she was clasping a folder in both of her hands, pressing it against her school uniform's shirt.

Surprisingly, she took an exact likeness to the photo your old coach had given you, so this was Ki-

"Kiyoko Shimizu" She grabbed your hand softly and shook it, "Coach Obi told me all about you over the phone" She was about to say something when she abruptly stopped, her eyes wide with shock, "that is, if you are (Y/n)" she looked flustered, "you are (Y/n) (L/n) right?"

You smiled and nodded, "yes, that's me"

Kiyoko looked so relieved after hearing those words, she sighed "sorry for doubting it for a second, you're just much lovelier in person compared to your photo!" She fished around in her skirt pocket and held out a photo from about a year ago, when you still had braces, you cringed at the sight of it. It was true your appearance had certainly blossomed after that, and as you grew more aware of your surroundings, you were drawing a lot of students eyes as they walked into the school.
