I moved away from him and fell to the floor. The dress spread around me in a circle. I put my face in my hands. I didn't want to be here with a man who would try to keep a young girl as his prisoner. I looked up at him, knowing he could see the tears on my face. I hoped he would feel some compassion and let me go. Instead he looked the door and went back to the table.

"I know you're tougher than that," He lifted the silver cover off his food. He nodded his head at mine, "Yours will spoil if you don't eat it warm."

"I'm not hungry," I sniffled and crossed my arms. I turned away from him. This sucked.

"You don't have to be a prisoner here."

"You kidnapped me!"

"Did you not enjoy waking up in a warm bed?"

"That doesn't matter. You or that guy took me! I don't want to be here!"

"You are my only hope Ms. Van Buren," he cleared his throat and continued, "If you agree to stay you will be treated like a princess. You will have free reign of the house. All the servants are at your disposal."

"And if I want to leave?"

"You can't."

"Why do I have to stay?" I stood and sat angrily on my chair. I lifted the lid off my plate and was surprised to see pizza. It was already getting cold so I picked it up and took a big bite. It was the best pizza I had ever tasted. I opened my eyes to see his raised eyebrow and smirk.

"Have you never had homemade pizza?"

"No. My parents were hardly around. They couldn't even make frozen Pizza."

"Well we make everything here fresh."

We finished eating in the silence. We exchanged glances every once in awhile. I cleaned my plate completely, eating three pieces altogether. Mona came in with a cart. It was filled with various pastries and cakes. She smiled at me.

"Hello Mona."

"Hello Ms. Van Buren."

I sighed. But I didn't want to get her in trouble so I didn't say anything. I took a raspberry tart off the cart. It was so good. I accidentally dropped it on my dress. I grabbed for a napkin knocking over my glass of water onto the cart. I stood mortified.

"I'm so sorry."

He laughed. I glanced at Mona who was wearing a shocked expression on her young face.

"Leaves us Mona," He stood up and walked over to me. He waited until Mona left before he offered me his hand. I slipped my hand into his," I enjoyed our dinner. Can I walk you back to your room?"

"Even if I say no you aren't going to listen to me."

"That's true."

I let him walk me back to my room. He stopped by my door and kissed my hand. Weird.

"I shall see you tomorrow for a morning walk. Think about what I said," He smiled, "I can give you what you've always wanted."

"I don't even know your name," I shook my head.

"Nathaniel."

"I'm Spencer."

"Goodnight then Spencer."

I went into my room after he disappeared down the hall. This was crazy. A week ago I was fighting for a stale piece of bread and know I could have anything I want? This sort of thing never happened in real life. There was a nightgown on the bed similar to the one I had slept in last night. I went to the screen and slipped out of the dress and into the gown.

I thought about what it would be like to be treated like a princess. It was foolish to believe he was telling me the truth. I knew I shouldn't agree to stay here, but what choice did I really have? Willing or not I was staying here. I brushed my hair before I crawled into the bed, closing the velvet around me. I closed my eyes, which were heavy from crying.

Mona woke me up at seven. She looked a little under the weather. I smiled. She returned it quickly.

"How are you this morning?" She made my bed as I put on the dress she had left hanging over the screen. I looked down at the pale yellow gown. It was much lighter than the ball gown yesterday.

"I'm alright. How are you?"

"Fine I guess."

"Anything wrong?" I walked over to her and placed my hands on her shoulders. I met her blue eyes.

"Nothing that can be fixed."

"Okay. So when am I meeting Nathaniel?"

"He told you his first name?"

"Why wouldn't he?" I asked pulling at my black hair, trying to fix it.

"He must like you or at least respect you."

"Sounds like a great honor," I rolled my eyes making the statement sarcastically.

"It is."

I turned to see Nathaniel leaning against the doorframe a frown on his face.

"I didn't mean anything by that," I rushed to explain. He nodded and left the room. I gave Mona a questioning look. She shrugged and finished cleaning my room. I sighed. I shouldn't have to feel bad. He didn't exactly make the best first impression. He did after all kidnap me.

Mona left, leaving the door open. I decided to find him and apologize. It was rude. Technically they did take me, but I had also been injured. I should have been thanking him. I headed down the hall. I went the way he had last night. I finally found him sitting in a huge study, after checking a few rooms. This was a huge house.

"Nathaniel?" I walked into the study. I waited for him to say something. He just sighed loudly.

"You can leave now."

"I would like to stay."

"Why? I said you could go."

"Before I came here I ran away," I took a nerve calming deep breath and continued, "I was treated very badly. I would rather be here than back in hell with those people."

"You really want to stay?"

"If I can have my clothes back then yes."

"Mona!" Nathaniel got up and left the room. I followed him down towards the dining room. We stopped in the kitchen. Mona was in there helping prepare breakfast.

"We need Spencer's clothes."

"Yes sir," Mona wiped her hands on the blue apron she wore and left the room with her head down.

"After you dress I'm assuming you will accompany me on my walk?"

"Yes of course," I smiled and grabbed one of the warm biscuits off the counter. Nathaniel disappeared while I waited. Mona came back a few minutes later and notified me that she had placed my clothes in my room. I decided to wear the dress for the walk. I didn't know why but I wanted to be accepted here.
