I sat in my room, music blaring through my headphones. I danced around my room, looking for my shoes.
I couldn't remember where I had put them, and my mother would kill me if I was late to dinner. I practically jumped for joy when I found them.
Slipping them on I surveyed my outfit for the evening. Long, flowing white sleeves hung loosely on my arms. Black jeans hugged my legs and my hair was up in a loose bun.
My black semi heels completed my outfit and I smiled. My mother said casual, but with her it couldn't be farther from the truth.
Coming from a rich family, I've never really known "casual." All the galas and business dinners never once called for it. In fact, even at home or out with friends I was expected to dress to kill.
Even tonight, when we had our weekly dinner with the Jones family. Martha and Fredrick Jones were friends of the family for as long as I could remember.
They were always around, and we're the sweetest people I knew. They thought of me as a daughter, and I was glad for the title.
I quickly looked at my phone and turned off my music as soon as I saw it was almost six. I slipped on small pearl earrings that my father got me for my sixteenth birthday and began the descent of our stairs.
My mother was shuffling around the large kitchen while my father attempted to fix his tie.
"Sadie Rae! Thank god! Help me put the salad on the table before the get here." She shoved a bowl in my arms and went to fix my father.
"Dammit woman! I know how to tie a tie." My mother ignored him and continued to fix it.
"The hell you do Richard. There. Now go sit down."
I smiled at them before turning my attention back to the food. Placing it on the table, I turned around to find my father at the head where he always sat.
He claimed it made a statement. He was the man, and that's where men sat. Before I could scoff at his position, my mother came fluttering back in.
"How do I look?" My mother said. Even in her flustered state she was a gorgeous woman. Short brown hair curled to perfection. Smooth, tan skin made her dark green dress that much better.
Strands of pearls lay across her chest and she messed with her earrings, a nervous tick of hers. I briefly wondered why she was so nervous. We had dinner with them every week, what could possibly be setting her on edge?
"Beautiful honey. Just stunning." My father said standing to kiss her cheek.
"Oh, yes. You are quite the sight mother." I gave her an easy smile before heading for the foyer. Perfect timing I'd say, because the door bell rang just as I stepped foot in the foyer.
"Sadie, please get that."
"I've got it!" I yelled back towards the kitchen.
As I approached the door, I suddenly felt very nervous. A bad feeling rolling in the pit of my stomach. My hand paused on the door bell as I tried to calm myself. Twisting the knob, I was met face to face with Martha.
"Oh my goodness! Sadie Rae you are quite stunning tonight." She said giving me a huge hug. I would have been delighted, but something was off.
When she pulled back her face was to happy. She almost looked sad and apologetic. She stepped past me into the kitchen where I heard pleasantries being exchanged.
"Sadie. How are you dear?" Fredrick said shaking my hand.
"Very good sir. I'm quite excited for mother's dessert tonight. She trying her hand at tiramisu." I winked at him as his face lit up.
"Well, I'm happy to hear that. If you'll excuse me."
"Of course." I was about to close the door, but a hand stopped it.
"Thanks for holding the door sweets." A deep voice said. I shivered.
Before I could protest a large man walked through the door and towards the kitchen. He didn't spare me one glance as he left me standing with my mouth open as open as the door.
When he had disappeared, I finally got ahold of myself and marched into the kitchen to figure out what was happening.
The words died on my lips however, when I was met with the hostile situation in the dining room. Mrs. Jones was stoic as she dismissed questions form my mother.
Mr. Jones was furious and staring at the strange man. My mother was as confused as I was, while my father was very calm.
He knew something we didn't.
"Who the fuck are you?" That was the first question that made itself know in the otherwise quite room.
"Sadie Rae Keith! Do not use that language!"
"Sorry mother, but the question still stands. Who are you?"
Nobody responded. I'm not sure it was by choice. I don't know that my mother knew.
The man turned around and I lost my breath. He towered over me, something I'd never expected. I'm a solid 5'7. He didn't look that tall, but I was proven wrong. I met his green eyes with curiosity as he stretched a tan arm out to me. I stared at it for a moment, very aware of the palpable silence in the room.
"My names Hayden. Hayden Jones. It's a pleasure to meet you."
