60. The Hybrid, the Witch, and the Massacre

Start from the beginning

"What are we looking for, an evil villain to-do list?" Caroline asked, more than a hint of sarcasm in her tone. "Steal blood, perform massacres, pick up dry cleaning?"

"We evil villains usually use minions to pick up our dry cleaning," Klaus said. Despite the imminent threat of Silas, it didn't seem like Klaus was taking it seriously.

Riley tutted. "Why am I not surprised? Your evil villain to-do list is probably 'Make minion pick up dry cleaning, make minion provide blood-filled dinner, kill minion'."

Klaus shook his head. "On the contrary, my minions are treated extremely well. Granted I do end up killing most of them..."

Caroline scoffed, turning to Stefan. "Why was he necessary again?"

"Well, we don't know what Silas can do," he reminded her. "So if we do have to go head-to-head with him, an Original vampire who can't die might come in handy."

"Good point," Riley nodded. As the only human, she'd be less than useless if it came to a head-to-head battle with the immortal Silas. She'd be dead.

As they searched, Caroline spotted a book on one of Professor Shane's shelves. Opening it, she found a page which spoke about expression triangles and read aloud.

"Human sacrifice can be used as a focus for power. It is rumored that the addition of two supernatural sacrifices compounds the mystical energy, creating an Expression triangle."

"One human sacrifice and two supernatural sacrifices," Riley repeated while Caroline looked at the symbols in the book. "We had the humans at the Young farm, one supernatural with Klaus's hybrids... what else is there?"

Caroline gasped, pointing to a symbol in the book. "Witches."

They had found that there were two possible spots where the witch massacre would be taking place. They all wanted to trust that Bonnie wouldn't kill 12 witches, but with Professor Shane, and possibly Silas, in her head, it was hard to know what she was capable of.

The group split up, Caroline opting to keep Klaus in line while Stefan and Riley stuck together.

They walked through the woods, leaves breaking repeatedly under their feet.

"I shouldn't be here," Riley frowned. "I'm a liability."

Stefan looked at her, raising an eyebrow. "You think you're a liability? Just because you're not a vampire doesn't mean you're not strong, Riley. I wouldn't have done half the stuff you've done if I was human."

Riley shrugged. "You guys are my family, y'know? I do what I can. That doesn't mean that I won't end up getting killed some day. Like Jeremy."

"So that's what this is about?" Stefan asked. "You're contemplating your own mortality because Jeremy died?"

Riley blew air out of her mouth. "I've been thinking about it. This life, your life, doesn't end well for humans. I'll either end up dying, or being turned."

"Or," Stefan started. "You'll stay human, and stay alive. Look Riley, everything happens for a reason. Look at Caroline, she's the best version of a vampire there could ever be. And you? You're the best version of a human. You guys are already exactly who you're supposed to be. I've been alive for over a century and I still don't know if I'm there yet."

She smiled, nudging his shoulder sympathetically with her own. Even though she was closer to Damon, Riley would always have a soft spot for the brother that brought her into this crazy world.

"While we're alone," Stefan continued. "I have to ask you something. Damon's your best friend. Do you think him taking Elena to New York was a good idea?"

Riley shrugged. "Damon is the most fun-loving vampire in the world, and that's with his humanity on. I think Elena's in pretty good hands. But you know that you guys broke up, right?"

Stefan smiled. "Even if we're not together, Elena's always gonna be a part of me."

Riley nodded as they kept walking. Eventually they came to an area of the woods where they could see a clear circle, lit with torches. Bonnie was lying on the ground and there were people, presumably witches, standing around her.

"Call Caroline!" Stefan shouted, vamp-running into the center of the circle to save Bonnie. Riley did as he said, watching the main witch do a spell that made Stefan clutch his head in agony. He sped back towards Riley.

"They're linked. Bonnie's gonna kill them."

"Not if the witches kill her first," a British-accented voice said, and suddenly Caroline and Klaus had joined them. "The only way to stop the witches is to kill them, and then Silas gets what he wants."

"We can't let them kill Bonnie," Riley spluttered, watching the crowd of witches. If they didn't do something soon, there would be no going back.

Thinking quickly, Caroline vamp-ran into the circle, immediately killing one of the witches. One-by-one, the witches died, dropping to the ground. The flames on the torches burnt out, signaling that Bonnie's mission was complete.

Riley ran into the circle, kneeling on the ground beside Bonnie, shaking her in an attempt to wake her. After a minute, Bonnie opened her eyes – they were completely white, making her look like a character from 'The Exorcist'.

"The triangle is complete."

Later, Stefan and Riley were standing in Bonnie's bedroom, waiting for her to wake up.

"Silas has everything he needs," Riley said absent-mindedly. "It's only a matter of time before he lifts the veil and gets everyone killed."

"We don't know that," Stefan said. "There might be something we can do." When he finished speaking, Bonnie began to wake up. She opened her eyes, and Riley was thankful to see that they had returned to normal. "Hey, how are you feeling?"

Bonnie looked around, clearly confused. "How did I get here?" Then she looked at Riley, even more confused. "I'm home? How did I get off the Island?"

"The Island?" Riley asked, raising an eyebrow at Stefan. "Bonnie, you all got off the island days ago."

"What's the last thing you remember?" Stefan asked.

Bonnie swallowed, casting her mind back to her most prominent memory. "I remember being in that cave, and Jeremy was trying to pry the cure out of Silas' hands. Please tell me he got it?"

The vampire and the human looked at each other. Stefan looked sad, while Riley was filled with worry. She sat on the end of Bonnie's bed and put a hand on her leg.

"Bonnie... something happened to Jeremy."
