You could see it on his face, sometimes. It was something so small that no one, not even you at first, could notice it. But once you saw it once, you were no longer ignorant to the reality of his change in expression.

His eyes being a little darker than normal, a little more observant. His smiling being just a touch too wide, or so fake that it might as well be plastic. Small things that Lawrence would let slip through what you later realized was a mask. What you and everyone else thought was "normal" for Lawrence was not truly who he was.

You saw the way he looked at some of the members in your group. The look was almost... dangerous. Overly critical. It was like he had a movie and script going off in his head. When someone didn't play the part and say the right thing... he got mad. No one saw it, but you did. Lawrence would get furious if things didn't go his way. And that's exactly what happened today.

You were all in a meeting, discussing future patrols and planning meals. All of you realizing that the area around the school was getting more dangerous, and supplies were running low. But what would you do? Where would you go?

"We could always try to go outside the city," Zion had suggested at some point. It was immediately turned down.

"We have no idea what's outside the city or even outside our specific area. Venturing too far into the unknown has risks. Deadly risks," Lawrence argues, albeit with reason. The points he made were all reasonable, but no one could ignore that-

"We can't stay here anymore. Going outside is dangerous, staying inside is dangerous," Zion slaps the desk he's sitting on and jumps off, making all eyes go towards him. "Everything is going to have risks at this point! No place is safe, anymore. Not even here!"

Eugene cuts in with a shrug. He looked almost guilty to contribute but speaks anyway. "He has a point. Anywhere we go, we're probably going to die. But we're running out of food..."

"Going somewhere with more food would heighten our chances of surviving immensely," even Harry joins in. "We can't deny that."

The argument continues, more and more people agreeing with Zion, but you had tuned them out. You watched Lawrence, observing as his shoulders tense and his jaw clench tight. He stayed quiet, assumingly to listen and consider each point being made, but you don't think that's the case. The way his eyes are shaded over... something is going on inside his head. And you don't think it's about leaving.

You quietly walk over to him, standing at his side and trying not to catch the attention of the other members. You tug on the orange of Lawrence's sleeve, making him look at you with those dangerous eyes of his. You try not to shiver as you tug him toward the door, a silent request to leave with him.

Once both of you are outside of the classroom, you take a deep breath and decide to lightly take hold of his wrist. His hands are shaking fists, but you manage to loosen one and hold his fingers in yours. You can't quite look in his eyes as you ask, "are you okay?"

It's quiet. Eerily so. You both stand in the silence before Lawrence holds your hand back. "What makes you think I'm not?"

"You don't want to leave," you look up at him. "I can see how upset you are about it."

Surprisingly, he smiles. The one that's maybe a little too wide, but you don't mind. "Do you want to leave?"

"I want to live, Lawrence," you sigh and look at your entwined hands. "I want to live with all of you. And to be honest, I really like this place. If we could all live here, I'd be really happy." Lawrence shifts and you feel him lean against the wall behind him, putting a cold space between you two before he drags you to him. You end up with your head on his chest, but you don't mind that either.

"But... moving on is a part of life, isn't it? It would be wonderful if we could plan everything out and have everything go the way we want it to, but life isn't like that. It's full of unexpected challenges, and I think this is one of them." You don't know if what you're saying is getting through to him or not, but you refuse to not at least try. You let go of his hand and wrap your arms around his waist, letting yourself relax and hold him. He shakes from above you, but he doesn't move away, so you stay. "If we stay together, I think we can get through it. Do you think that way, too?"

Lawrence lets out a large sigh, something you can feel before you hear it. His long arms wrap around you, holding you back, if not a little tighter. "I don't know." He says, and you can at least appreciate the honesty.

"That's okay," you whisper.

Somehow, that's exactly what he needed to hear. He leads you both back into the classroom eventually, where the guys are waiting for you. You notice his eyes are a little clearer than before, and maybe it has to do with how you're still with him, holding his hand. You stay by his side as he finally contributes to the conversation, expressing at least some of his doubts and discomfort. You know that his mask is still there, but it's cracked.

Something tells you that this man has the capability to be very dangerous. The fact that you can tell he's not being honest is already a warning sign, but maybe if you try and stay by his side, you can tame whatever beast is inside him.

You can only hope.
