September, 2004

The next year passed quickly for the Potters. Without any major events or situations happening, the family was pretty relaxed.

Ginny stood in her bathroom one morning on a crisp autumn day in September. Harry had left for work a moment ago, and Teddy was with Andromeda for the day. Her hand was resting on her abdomen.

Ginny took a deep breath and performed the spell again, just to be sure. And sure enough, a yellow hue illuminated her stomach, indicating she was pregnant. It was confirmed now. A baby was in her stomach. She was going to be a mother, and Harry a father.

Setting aside the shock from the news, Ginny allowed herself to relax and let the joy wash over her. She was going to be a mother! She'd have a living, breathing, child and not just the dolls she used to play with when she was younger.

Ginny regained her composure and thought for a moment. Harry needed to know, but he was at work. Harry was still Head Auror, and he was quite busy. Unable to contain the news any longer, she thought of somebody else she could tell. She had to tell her mum, of course! She left the bathroom and made her way down to the study where she wrote a letter.

"There. Send this to my mum, please," Ginny smiled as the owl accepted the letter and flew out the open window. All she had to do now was wait.

Just minutes later, Ginny heard a knocking at her door. She opened the door to reveal her mum, who looked worried.

"Ginny! I got your letter, is everything alright?" she asked frantically. Ginny nodded.

"Everything's fine, Mum. Come in."

Mrs. Weasley and Ginny settled onto the couch with mugs of tea. Mrs. Weasley spoke to her daughter again. "What is it you wanted to speak to me about, dear?"

"Mum...I'm pregnant."

Mrs. Weasley's mouth dropped open. "Oh, Ginny, that's wonderful! Congratulations! Who else knows?"

Ginny grinned. "Just you, for now. Harry's at work and Teddy's with Andromeda."

"Oh, Ginny...you're going to be a mother." Mrs. Weasley beamed as she pulled her daughter in for a big hug. Ginny and her mother were ecstatic.

The mother and daughter lounged around the house for the rest of the day, talking about motherhood and baby names. They settled on not telling anyone else before Harry and Teddy, so Ginny anxiously waited for them to get home.

It was hours later, when Ginny was preparing dinner with a smile on her face left over from the morning, did Harry and Teddy arrive home.

"Hey, Gin, sorry we're late. I was busy at work, but Teddy didn't mind staying at Andromeda's for another few minutes," Harry smiled as he gave his wife a quick kiss hello. He hung up his and Teddy's coats on the coat rack and sat down at the table. "How was your day, love?"

"Oh, it was really relaxing. I'm glad Gwen gave us those few weeks off Quidditch for a while; I think we all needed them." Ginny fought hard to keep the smile off her face. This news was so important, she didn't want to just blurt it out. "How was you day with Grandma Andy, Ted?"

"It was good," Teddy shrugged as he shoveled food into his mouth. The Potters ate in silence for a while before the conversation started to flow again.

Dinner finished up quickly, and Teddy went to go play in the living room. Ginny was still finding the right time to tell Harry. Finally, just as she was about to give up, she found an opportunity.

"Quick glass of Firewhisky, Gin? We've got some left over from Hermione's birthday," Harry asked her once dinner was over.

"Actually, I'll have to pass on this one," she responded, the corners of her lips turned up.

"Oh, okay," Harry shrugged and poured a small glass for himself. "You feeling alright?"

"Great, actually. Harry, I'm pregnant."

The glass Harry was holding dropped to the ground and shattered. Harry looked at Ginny, then at her stomach. Without saying a word, he pulled Ginny in for a kiss and lifted her off the ground.

"I—you—we're having a baby?" Harry exclaimed. Ginny nodded.

"We're having a baby!" Harry pulled Ginny in for another electric kiss, and spun her around. They were both laughing like giddy children in a candy shop.

"What's going on?" Teddy had wandered into the kitchen. It was no surprise that they had distracted him from his playing—they were being quite loud.

"Teddy! We've got some brilliant news!" Harry smiled, his hand intertwined with Ginny's. "You wanna do the honors, Gin?"

"Ted...we're having a baby!" Ginny laughed. "You're going to have a little brother or sister."

"When? Ooh, can I play with them like Vic?" Teddy asked, his eyes wide with wonder. Harry grinned and ruffled his hair.

"In nine months. And yes, you'll be able to play with them, but not for a while," Harry answered.

The small family spent the evening together, celebrating and relaxing. Everyone was so excited, and Harry and Ginny put Teddy to bed in a good mood. They went back downstairs for a while after he fell asleep.

"When should we tell everyone else?" Harry asked absentmindedly as he sat curled up with Ginny on the couch.

"Well, I already know that I don't want to tell everyone at dinner on Sunday. That's what everyone always does," Ginny replied as her adroit fingers worked her hair into a braid.

"Got it. Who should we tell first?" Harry asked. Ginny sat up.

"I think it's pretty obvious, isn't it?"

Harry nodded. "Ron and Hermione," the two said in unison. They burst out into a fit of laughter.

The laughing and giddiness eventually died down as Harry and Ginny got ready for bed. They were both exhausted from the great but eventful day.

"Mmm, I'm tired," Ginny smiled sleepily as she climbed into bed. "I can't believe I have a child growing inside of me."

"Neither can I." Harry rested his hand on Ginny's abdomen. "I'm so excited to be parents, Gin. I love you so much."

"I love you, too. And I love our baby so much."

Harry nodded. They could work out the complications later. Right now, they were content resting in bed together with the knowledge that things were about to change for the better.
