Chapter 2: True Love

"Qiao Qiao... aren't you worried about the First Prince. How he's taking the news of Xiao Dan's death?" Fa Zhen said as sorrow built up in her eyes and deeply burrowed into the corners of her heart.

Lan Qiao stopped in her tracks, returning her gaze to Fa Zhen.

"Fa Zhen, all that was between Xiao Dan and the First Prince. I'm Lan Qiao now. Besides, the First Prince is merely a mortal, who could never be with someone like me. There's many available suitors in the Nine Heavens that I could be with, even though they are all so annoyingly obsessed with marriage."

Fa Zhen didn't understand the overwhelming affection from suitors like Lan Qiao. She's never been proposed to countless of times. The love between Xiao Dan and the First Prince was the only genuine love that she had witnessed, and for the first time she wished that the man chasing after Lan Qiao would see her.

"Let's go see the First Prince," Fa Zhen decided.

"Are you crazy? I'm not going back there. I have to get back before I get in even more trouble."

"Don't you feel bad at all for the First Prince?"

"It's not that I don't feel bad, it's just that I'm done with it now. It's got nothing to do with me anymore."

"Do you not worry about him? How can you say you loved him when you can so conveniently leave?"

"Fa Zhen, you are really going crazy. It was only a trial relationship. I don't have to deal with him anymore. You can come with me or not. I don't care. I'm leaving now!"

Lan Qiao effortlessly lifted her body off the ground, ascending to the skies, her back turned. Fa Zhen could not believe the heartlessness of her best friend. Even if it was just a trial relationship, even if he was just a mortal, true love was the rarest thing in the universe that even it cannot be so easily found in the Nine Heavens.

"Fine! I'll go myself." Fa Zhen also with no struggle, propelled herself from the grassy field and flew toward the palace.

Back at the palace, the First Prince had not recollected himself at all with a jar of wine in hand. It was now the morning after learning of Xiao Dan's death. He drank never-ending as his personal guard, Yuan, stood outside the First Prince's chambers waiting for the moment to quickly run to the prince's side should he ever put himself in danger.

Fa Zhen glided smoothly across the courtyard to the back window of the First Prince's chambers. Slightly opening a window, her eyes fixated on the prince, who was lying on the floor as a single tear dripped down the side of his face. Hi mouth opened slightly for air. The heaviness of grief has made even breathing such an unbearable thing.

"Xiao Dan... why didn't you wait for me? Why didn't you have faith in me? Why... Why did you leave me?" The First Prince's voice spoke like shattered despair causing Fa Zhen's heart to break into a thousand pieces.

If only you know that that clumsy Xiao Dan slipped into the pond, and she wasn't trying to end her life!

"I would have given up everything for you. My status, my money, my desire for the throne."

Fa Zhen's eyes grew wide. The First Prince had never been the favored prince of all of his brothers. To him, the throne had been what his life was meant for, a way to move himself up the ladder. Birthed by one of the Emperor's many concubines, First Prince Yun had prepared his life to gain favor and become Emperor, but after his mother's death, the Emperor's appreciation for Prince Yun dwindled even more. The Empress had always have a great dislike for him. She'd much rather have her son, the Fifth Prince, become Crown Prince.

Watching the First Prince from the side without being able to touch him frustrated Fa Zhen. She couldn't run over to him and comfort him, couldn't tell him it was only a trial relationship, couldn't tell him all the secrets she had kept from him.

"I... should probably go bid Shao Gege goodbye." Fa Zhen reluctantly closed the window with a heavy heart. There was still one more person she wished to see, and that was Shao Gege. He was the older brother of Xiao Dan. Both their parents passed away leaving them to care for themselves. Shao Gege was not a pushover orphan for lecherous relatives to take advantage of. Instead he raised through the ranks of the army and became a competent General just like his father. Xiao Dan was born of a concubine, but Shao Gege treasured her like she was his full-blooded sister. Despite being twenty eight already, he had brushed off all prospects of marriage. He was kind to Yi Chen, the orphaned girl he took in to serve Xiao Dan. Therefore, Yi Chen had always admired Shao Gege. Even as Fa Zhen now, she wanted pay some respect to the man who gave her a chance at a humble life.

The Mo residence was dead quiet when Fa Zhen landed in front of Xiao Dan's chambers. Almost every servant were lined up outside, standing quietly still. Fa Zhen teleported inside Xiao Dan's room to observe the grieving Shao Gege. His eyes had no light, staring at the cold, stiff body of Xiao Dan.

An old man on his knees pleaded, "My lord... Young Miss had already stopped breathing when she was pulled out from the water... I cannot do anything to revive a dead--"

"Shut your mouth!" Shao Gege's thunderous voice echoed in the room, "If you want to live, you will save her."

"General, the condition of the maid Yi Chen has stabilized. The doctor has told me that she will most likely be in a coma until she awakens." Kang, Shao Gege's second in command, stepped beside the frustrated General with this information.

Shao Gege nodded but did not take his eyes off of Xiao Dan.

What the hell? I'm alive? I'm still alive? I mean the human version of me, Yi Chen... but how could it be that my soul is here? I have to go back into my body! So I can tell the First Prince what really happened! But... I'd look like I've gone crazy. These humans won't believe I'm actually an immortal. Nevertheless, if I returned to my body... the one the First Prince love isn't Yi Chen. It's Xiao Dan. If I entered the body of Xiao Dan and continue to live a mortal life as her... that would make the First Prince happy. It would make Shao Gege happy... this is something I can do to repay the kindness you've given me.

Fa Zhen had decided she was going to enter her soul into the body of the mortal Xiao Dan that looked exactly like Lan Qiao. She was finally able to have the courage and confess her love to First Prince Yun. She pulled her fingers to her chest to concentrate on extracting her soul. Soon her body morphed into a glowing pearl and entered the body of Xiao Dan.
